What They Do
TenneT is the electricity transmission system operator for the Netherlands and large parts of Germany, responsible for designing, building, maintaining, and operating high-voltage grids without generating electricity itself (source: tennet.eu). As one of the largest European grid operators, the company focuses on both onshore and offshore transmission infrastructure, including interconnectors linking the Dutch, German, and neighboring electricity markets (source: gevernova.com). TenneT manages over 25,000 kilometers of high-voltage networks and facilitates reliable power supply and cross-border energy flows through 17 interconnectors (source: tennet.eu). The company primarily serves electricity systems such as producers, offshore wind developers, industrial users, and grid operators, distinguishing itself through large-scale investments in complex onshore and offshore networks, including 2 GW of offshore grid connections in the North Sea (source: gevernova.com).
Projects & Experience
TenneT has an impressive track record in expanding the electricity grid in Germany and the Netherlands. In 2024, the company invested EUR 10.6 billion in onshore and offshore projects, a 38% increase compared to 2023 (source: energeia.nl). Key milestones included the start of cable production for the 2 GW offshore projects BalWin4 and LanWin1, progress on the German onshore projects SuedLink and SuedOstLink, and the commissioning of Wahle-Mecklar, Germany’s longest AC project (source: wab.net). In the Netherlands, projects such as Southwest 380 kV, IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Beta, and Hollandse Kust West were further developed (source: wab.net). Additionally, in June 2024, a third 2 GW HVDC offshore transmission contract was awarded for Nederwiek 2, with planned delivery in 2031, as part of a framework for IJmuiden Ver Beta, IJmuiden Ver Gamma, and Nederwiek 2 (source: gevernova.com). Investment plans for the next decade include around 700 major infrastructure projects, including new 380 kV “power highways,” 140 upgraded substations, and nearly 21 GW of offshore wind networks (source: tennet.eu).
Recent Developments
Over the past two years, TenneT’s focus has been on financing, offshore grid expansion, and long-term partnerships. The Dutch government provided two shareholder loans totaling EUR 44 billion to support investments through 2026 (source: energeia.nl). In March 2025, the annual report highlighted the combination of high revenue, investment levels, and significant project progress on land and at sea (source: wab.net). In April 2024, Dutch grid operators published final investment plans for the coming decade, with TenneT expecting to execute about 700 major infrastructure projects (source: tennet.eu). Furthermore, TenneT announced long-term partnerships for grid expansion, including a framework agreement for 110 and 150 kV GIS installations and a first time-based contract with GIGA Storage, indicating a growing focus on innovative procurement models and system integration (source: tennet.eu).
Careers at TenneT
TenneT recruits professionals in various roles such as engineering, asset management, grid services, offshore, planning and permitting, and office administration (source: karriere.tennet.eu). The organization has offices in Bayreuth, Lehrte, Hannover, Bremen, Ingolstadt, and Oldenburg, offering both hybrid and on-site work options (source: karriere.tennet.eu). With approximately 5,000 employees and 89 nationalities across its two main locations, TenneT is characterized as an international technical organization with cross-border activities (source: karriere.tennet.eu). The company culture strongly focuses on high-voltage operations, technical project execution, and infrastructure development, with customer orientation primarily aimed at system users rather than consumers (source: tennet.eu).
