About the position

We are seeking an experienced, proactive, and values-driven Program Manager - Technology to join our Technology & PMO team. Reporting directly to the Head of PMO (Delivery & Transformation), this pivotal role serves as the critical strategic interface between business units and Technology, driving the delivery of complex multi-domain programs that underpin Snowy Hydro's corporate strategy and energy transition initiatives.

In this role, you will take ownership of a rich, diverse technology portfolio spanning Generation, Commercial Operations, and Retail environments-ranging from system integration to trading platform enhancements (ITMS), cybersecurity, and corporate applications. Leading an established team of 9 to 15 internal and contract Project Managers, you will champion delivery hygiene and rigorous governance while empowering and developing our internal capability.

If you are an empathetic leader and clear communicator who excels at bridging technical detail with C-suite strategy, navigating transformation, and turning complex roadmaps into high-impact business outcomes, this chunky and impactful role offers an outstanding opportunity to make your mark.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Roadmap & Prioritisation: Own the technology delivery roadmap for assigned business domains. Track financial-year capital investment technology commitments, facilitate quarterly domain prioritisation reviews, and balance competing business demand against delivery capacity to maximise organisational value.
  • Program Delivery & Best-Practice Assurance: Oversee end-to-end execution across multiple concurrent technology projects. Maintain rigorous project hygiene, best-practice delivery controls, risk mitigation, and milestone tracking across both traditional waterfall and modern agile/hybrid delivery lifecycles.
  • People Leadership & Capability Development: Lead, coach, and support a team of 9 to 15 Project Managers. Cultivate internal capability and "grow energy superstars" by identifying skill gaps, offering targeted development pathways, and supporting team wellbeing and resilience through organisational transformation.
  • Executive Stakeholder Partnership: Facilitate program steering committees attended by executive stakeholders. Act as a strategic translator by turning complex technical challenges and project data into plain, accessible business language, maintaining executive confidence and ensuring transparent escalation management.
  • Delivery Governance & Tooling: Establish operational rigour and transparent reporting using enterprise tools (Jira, ServiceNow SPM), providing executive leadership and the Head of PMO with frontline visibility into portfolio health, delivery pinch points, and financial performance.

About the location

This role is a hybrid position, which can be based in Melbourne or Sydney (with regional travel where required), operating under our flexible 3-day in-office policy.

About you

  • Professional Background: Extensive experience (7+ years) leading technology program delivery, PMO functions, or portfolio governance within large, complex environments. Energy/utility sector experience is highly regarded, though candidates with strong backgrounds across banking, retail, or critical infrastructure are warmly encouraged to apply.
  • Diverse Technology Exposure: Demonstrated track record overseeing diverse technology programs-spanning corporate systems, infrastructure, systems integration, cyber security, or operational technology-alongside an appetite to quickly grasp unfamiliar domains.
  • High-Calibre People Leadership: Proven track record managing teams of 8+ project professionals, passionate about mentoring, fostering psychological safety, managing workload fatigue during change, and upskilling talent.
  • Agile & Hybrid Delivery Expertise: Deep practical understanding of diverse delivery methodologies, specifically hybrid models (waterfall governance coupled with agile delivery execution), particularly in data, digital, and AI-enabled initiatives.
  • Executive Communication & Translation: Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the proven ability to articulate technical concepts simply and persuasively to C-suite and executive steering committees.
  • Governance & Tools: Practical experience with portfolio management software such as ServiceNow SPM, Jira, and enterprise reporting dashboards. Relevant certifications in Program or Project Management (e.g., MSP, Prince2, PMP, Agile/Scrum) or equivalent practical experience.

Approximately 1,000-5,000 employees (source: leadiq.com). Snowy Hydro is a wholly-owned Commonwealth company with no public revenue data available for 2023 or later.

What They Do

Snowy Hydro's core technology focus is on pumped hydro-electricity, gas-fired peaking, diesel peaking, and contracted wind and solar renewables. The company operates 16 power stations and one pumping station, boasting a total generating capacity of over 5,500 MW dispatched to the National Electricity Market (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which is a significant part of their operations, features nine hydro-electric power stations and 16 dams linked by 145 km of tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts, primarily located in Kosciuszko National Park. Additionally, Snowy Hydro manages water storage and diversion under the Snowy Water Licence for irrigation to the Murray and Murrumbidgee systems (source: wikipedia.org).

Projects & Track Record

Snowy Hydro has a rich history of notable projects, including the original Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which was completed in 1974 and delivered a total output of 3,740 MW from seven power stations, such as Guthega, which began operations in 1955 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The company also operates significant gas assets, including the Colongra Power Station (667 MW, acquired in 2015), Laverton North (320 MW), and Latrobe Valley (300 MW) in Victoria, along with three diesel stations in South Australia totaling 136 MW (source: wikipedia.org). Currently, major projects include Snowy 2.0, which aims to link the Tantangara and Talbingo dams via a 27 km underground tunnel and establish a new pumped-hydro station for 2,000 MW generation and 175 hours of storage, with construction having commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au).

Recent Developments

In March 2018, the Australian Government acquired full ownership of Snowy Hydro by purchasing shares from New South Wales and Victoria, solidifying its status as a wholly-owned Commonwealth entity (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The construction of Snowy 2.0 is a significant advancement in the company's portfolio, marking it as a nation-building pumped-hydro project that commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). Additionally, Snowy Hydro has secured contracts for over 1,000 MW from ten wind and solar projects, enhancing its renewable energy offerings (source: leadiq.com).

Snowy Hydro offers a diverse range of roles across various departments, including generation (hydro, gas, diesel operations), engineering, construction, and retail services through brands like Red Energy and Lumo Energy. The company also has opportunities in support functions such as IT, HR, and finance, with hiring occurring at their headquarters in Cooma, the Sydney office, and various project sites across New South Wales and Victoria (source: leadiq.com). The company culture emphasizes community support and has a long history of integrating a multinational workforce, with 65% of the original workforce being migrants from over 30 nations (source: nma.gov.au).
