Job description
What you'll do
You'll join a technology community of product-focused and data-led product and platform engineers working at scale. We have a diverse ecosystem, spanning TypeScript on AWS, Go on GCP and Scala, we index on product-minded problem solving over language purity.
As a Tech Lead you'll own a slice of the product end-to-end, from design through to production, and you'll build AI coding agents as your default. We're looking for someone whose judgement is worth more than their typing speed.
From your first day you'll have paid access to Claude Code, with a budget we don't ration, and access to the systems you need through MCP. Our tools and conventions evolve quickly, and you'll directly impact how we build from here.
- Own a slice of the product end to end: shape the problem with product and design, build the interface and the services behind it, ship it, and run it in production.
- Work across the stack over time: depending on the team you'll work across the interface people use, the services behind it, and the APIs between them, in whatever stack your team runs.
- Build with AI coding agents as your default: Break work down so agents can execute, direct them, and review their output as carefully as you'd review a colleague's pull request. You'll also maintain the tests and safeguards that let agent written code merge safely.
- Stay close to the people who use what you build: directly or through our forward-deployed engineers: a supplier's operations team, a customer plugging in a car at night. Instrument what you ship so you can see how it's used, and turn what you learn into shipped changes.
- Make good work the default: shape the codebase, conventions and automated checks so that agents and new teammates produce the right thing without anyone catching it in review.
- Mentor the team around you: Coach and mentor your peers and help improve how we work and evolve as a team.
What you'll bring
These are the practices and behaviours we see most in our top engineers and value deeply, but we don't expect everyone to tick every single box. If you're excited by the role and can see yourself thriving here, we'd love to hear from you.
- Experience shipping production software: You have a depth of experience in either a front-end or back-end of a modern stack, and potentially an openness to stretch across both as you navigate our diverse ecosystem.
- AI coding tools: You build with tools like Cursor or Claude Code, can walk us through work you've shipped this way and review AI output as rigorously as a colleague's pull request.
- Able to navigate a complex, high-stakes domain: You keep complex energy logic legible across microservices, knowing exactly when to use sync vs async to prevent cascading failures.
- Cloud and operational ownership: You're comfortable deploying on major cloud platforms using shared tooling. You fully own your software in production, which includes participating in an out-of-hours on-call rota.
- Strong product sense: You ask the "why" before building, and you can describe a time when user feedback or metrics changed what you shipped.
- Clear written communication: You write specs, pull request descriptions and post-mortems with enough clarity and context that either a human teammate or an AI agent can immediately act on them.
- A multiplier for your team: You mentor peers and proactively shape how the team works; introducing conventions, checks or shared context that makes everyone else's output consistently better.
It would be great if you have
- Experience building tooling around coding agents, such as MCP servers, skills or CI checks
- Experience in energy, or another real-time or regulated field
Our Perks
- Time off and family: 26 days' holiday, plus 26 weeks' full pay for new parents with no qualifying service period
- Health and security: Private medical insurance with virtual GP, life assurance, pension scheme, free mortgage advice and eye tests
- Pay and flexibility: Discretionary bonus, a Flex Fund of 5% of salary to spend on the benefits you want most, retail discounts through Perks at Work
- Growth and setup: Personal learning budget, home office budget
- Climate: Access to Furthr, our climate action app
We want to meet people from all walks of life. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be, and we recognise talent on merit and potential. If you're excited about the role but don't tick every box, we'd still love to hear from you.
This role requires an existing right to work in the UK. We can't offer visa sponsorship, but we review sponsorship role by role, so keep an eye on our careers site for future opportunities.

About this role
About Kaluza
Company Overview
Kaluza
London, England, United Kingdom
2019
Approximately 50 employees (source: linkedin.com). Revenue figures are not publicly disclosed as Kaluza remains privately held without a parent company beyond its OVO origins and key shareholders like AGL and Mitsubishi Corporation through joint ventures.
What They Do
Kaluza is a London-based energy software company that specializes in a real-time SaaS platform designed to optimize energy operations, integrate smart devices, and support decarbonization for utilities worldwide. The company was launched as a spin-out from OVO Energy, which recognized the need for a platform capable of managing smart meter data, EV chargers, solar inverters, and dynamic tariffs to facilitate the sustainable energy transition. Kaluza's technology is built on a cloud-native, modular architecture that leverages AI-driven forecasting to enable dynamic load balancing and renewable integration, making it a pivotal player in the energy sector (source: sustainabletimes.co.uk).
Projects & Track Record
Kaluza has made significant strides in the energy sector, notably powering OVO's acquisition of a large UK incumbent, which allowed it to consolidate tech stacks and become the UK's fourth-largest energy provider. The company manages over six million meters and has successfully delivered over 100 GWh of load optimization through its innovative tariffs. Major ongoing projects include deploying its platform for AGL Energy in Australia, following a substantial $100 million investment and licensing agreement, as well as a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation aimed at enhancing energy solutions for utilities and automakers in Japan. Additionally, Kaluza signed a multi-year global agreement with Engie in September 2025, which will enable real-time intelligence for distributed energy resources across Engie's extensive consumer contracts (source: eurelectric.org).
Recent Developments
In June 2024, Kaluza secured a $100 million investment and licensing deal from AGL Energy, which significantly boosted its valuation to $500 million. This investment is particularly timely, given the current volatility in energy prices and the growing demand for EV and solar solutions. Shortly thereafter, Kaluza launched a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation to expand its operations in Japan, targeting utilities and automakers. In September 2025, the company further solidified its market position by signing a multi-year global agreement with Engie, which followed a rigorous technology evaluation process. This agreement will facilitate the optimization of distributed energy resources across Engie's markets, showcasing Kaluza's leadership in the energy transformation space (source: kaluza.com).
Working There
Kaluza offers a dynamic work environment with roles spanning engineering, product development, commercial/sales, operations, and sustainability. The company is focused on building teams that specialize in various platform modules, including energy optimization, billing, customer care, and data intelligence. Recent leadership additions, such as a Chief Commercial Officer, reflect Kaluza's commitment to expanding its teams in key markets like the UK, Australia, Japan, and the US. The company culture is mission-driven, emphasizing innovation and a shared goal of accelerating the clean energy transition. Kaluza's B Corp certification and commitment to net zero by 2030 further illustrate its dedication to purpose-led operations (source: kaluza.com).
