Battery Energy Storage Systems Jobs in Renewable Energy

Battery energy storage systems are stationary installations, from containerised megawatt-hour units on substation land to racks in a commercial basement, that charge and discharge lithium-ion or flow cells to shift electricity in time and hold the grid's frequency steady. Within the wider energy storage sector, batteries now set the pace: the IEA recorded 108 GW of new battery capacity worldwide in 2025, around 40 per cent more than in 2024, with roughly 87 GW of that utility-scale. Battery storage is now the fastest-growing power technology in the world, and the hiring follows it.

One distinction shapes almost every vacancy in this field. Stationary storage is not automotive battery work. The cell chemistry overlaps, but the engineering problem does not: a grid battery cycles for fifteen or twenty years against market price signals and grid codes, sits inside an HV connection, and is judged on availability and round-trip efficiency rather than on weight or crash performance. Candidates arriving from the car industry are common, and the ones who get hired are those who can talk about degradation modelling, state of charge management, and the local connection regime rather than pack assembly.

The roles behind a single project

A grid battery passes through several teams before it earns money. Development and origination secure the site, the grid connection offer, and the revenue contract. Engineering sizes the system in both power and energy terms, specifies the inverters and transformers, and writes the protection philosophy. Construction and commissioning teams install the containers, energise, and run the performance tests. Once live, asset managers and control-room operators dispatch the battery into frequency and wholesale markets, and field service technicians handle module replacements and HVAC faults, which are a far more common cause of downtime than the cells themselves.

That sequence explains the job titles employers actually advertise: BESS engineer, principal BESS engineer, battery storage technician, asset manager for battery storage, BESS electrical estimator, and project and construction managers who have already delivered a storage site rather than a solar farm. Titles combining storage with a commercial remit, such as commercial manager or procurement manager on a battery portfolio, are among the hardest to fill.

Where the employers are

Integrators and manufacturers hire steadily across the cycle. On Rejobs the recurring names include Fluence Energy, Canadian Solar through its storage arm, Eos Energy Enterprises, and the developer and EPC side represented by Neoen Australia, SOLV Energy, Clearway Energy Group, and Invenergy. The geography splits between the United States, where Chicago, Denver, San Diego, and Scottsdale account for a large share of postings, and northern Europe, with Hamburg, Berlin, London, and Stockholm leading.

Europe's own build-out gives a sense of what the next decade demands. The EU added 27.1 GWh of batteries in 2025, taking the fleet to 77.3 GWh, and SolarPower Europe estimates the bloc needs roughly 750 GWh by 2030 to meet its flexibility requirements. A tenfold increase in five years is not achievable with the current number of commissioning engineers and control-room operators, which is why employers have started recruiting from power electronics and substation backgrounds and training storage specifics in-house.

The skills premium sits where hardware meets the market. An engineer who understands cell degradation and can also explain how a battery bids into a capacity or balancing market is unusual, and that combination is what separates a project engineer from an asset manager's salary. Adjacent depth in battery management systems or long-duration storage chemistries broadens the options further as four-hour lithium projects give way to longer durations.
