About Swissgrid

Company overview

Swissgrid AG, national transmission system operator of Switzerland

Aarau, Switzerland

2006

Approximately 900 employees (source: swissgrid.ch). Net revenue of CHF 1,825.1 million in 2024 (source: report.swissgrid.ch).

What they do

Swissgrid is the national transmission system operator of Switzerland and operates the country’s extra-high voltage electricity transmission grid. The company is not responsible for electricity generation or the development of conventional renewable energies but ensures the reliable transport of electricity between generation regions, international interconnectors and consumption centres. Swissgrid keeps the system balanced in real time, manages cross-border electricity flows and plans and builds the necessary infrastructure for power transmission (source: swissgrid.ch). Core tasks include system operation, procurement and activation of balancing energy, grid planning, market and settlement services, as well as international coordination with European transmission system operators (source: swissgrid.ch). Swissgrid uses state-of-the-art digital technologies, automation and data platforms to monitor the grid and efficiently manage complex power flows (source: swissgrid.ch). Customers include power producers, distribution system operators, large consumers, traders and European market platforms, while end consumers are indirectly connected to Swissgrid via local distribution companies (source: swissgrid.ch).

Projects and track record

Swissgrid is pursuing a long-term infrastructure programme called Strategic Grid 2040, which includes 31 major grid projects up to 2040 and foresees investments of around CHF 5.5 billion. This programme involves reinforcing approximately 400 kilometres of existing lines, constructing around 790 kilometres of new lines and dismantling about 790 kilometres of old lines (source: swissgrid.ch). A standout project is the 220 kV Gotthard cable, which replaces a roughly 23-kilometre overhead line over the Gotthard Pass with an underground cable in the Gotthard road tunnel. This project is realised in cooperation with the Federal Roads Office and has an estimated investment of over CHF 140 million (source: swissgrid.ch). The Bickigen–Mettlen project replaces an ageing 220 kV line between Bern and Lucerne with a new line, with construction planned between 2031 and 2034 (source: swissgrid.ch). Additionally, a new transformer was commissioned in 2025 at the Bonaduz substation in Graubünden to strengthen the transmission grid in this region (source: swissgrid.ch). Swissgrid operates around 6,700 kilometres of lines and about 147 substations, including 41 international interconnectors, highlighting the importance of international coordination for European electricity flows (source: swissgrid.ch).

Current developments

In 2024, Swissgrid achieved net revenue of CHF 1.825 billion, an increase of CHF 605.9 million compared to 2023. This rise reflects the tariff-based and pass-through nature of the revenues, not growth in competitive business (source: report.swissgrid.ch). In April 2025, Swissgrid published the Strategic Grid 2040 programme, defining long-term infrastructure needs and naming 31 projects with an investment volume of around CHF 5.5 billion (source: swissgrid.ch). In March 2025, the Gotthard cable project received building approval, a key milestone for constructing the 220 kV tunnel cable system (source: swissgrid.ch). Also in March 2025, Swissgrid submitted the application for the sectoral planning procedure for the long-term renewal of the Bickigen–Mettlen line (source: swissgrid.ch). Innovation work has been expanded, including the PV4Balancing pilot project, which investigates how photovoltaic systems can provide flexibility for the balancing energy market (source: swissgrid.ch). In 2025, Swissgrid invested CHF 356.6 million, of which CHF 281.2 million was in grid expansion and CHF 15.3 million in maintenance, with a net profit of CHF 91.7 million (source: swissgrid.ch).

Working at Swissgrid
