Energy storage has become the fastest-scaling segment of the clean energy transition. Global battery energy storage system (BESS) installations reached 315 GWh in 2025, a 51% jump from the previous year, with 46 giga-scale projects (1 GWh or larger) entering operation compared to just 17 in 2024. The pipeline for 2026 already exceeds 150 giga-scale projects and over 450 GWh of anticipated deployments, with no material supply constraints in sight.

What the work actually involves

Energy storage roles span far more than battery chemistry. The sector needs project managers who can navigate grid connection timelines, electrical engineers designing high-voltage DC systems, field service technicians maintaining container-scale battery arrays, and commercial analysts modelling revenue stacking across wholesale, ancillary, and capacity markets. Systems integration is where much of the complexity lives: connecting a 500 MWh battery to the grid requires expertise in power electronics, SCADA controls, and thermal management that few other sectors demand simultaneously.

Who is hiring

The employer landscape ranges from pure-play storage developers to vertically integrated energy companies. Eos Energy Enterprises is scaling production of its zinc-based battery technology as an alternative to lithium-ion. Zenobe, one of Europe's largest independent storage operators, has grown rapidly with a fleet spanning the UK, Australia and Europe. Wartsila brings grid-scale storage to its existing power plant portfolio, while sonnen focuses on residential and virtual power plant systems across Germany and beyond. Plus Power develops some of the largest standalone BESS projects in the United States, and Voltalia combines storage with its global renewable generation fleet.

In-demand roles

Project managers and senior project managers consistently top hiring volumes, reflecting the capital-intensive, multi-stakeholder nature of storage development. Electrical engineers, particularly those with high voltage or substation engineering backgrounds, are in acute demand. Field service engineers and technicians keep the growing installed base running. Asset managers handle performance optimisation and revenue management across increasingly complex market structures. Business development managers are needed to secure sites, grid connections, and offtake agreements in competitive markets.

Market dynamics shaping careers

System prices fell to $63/kWh in Chinese tenders during 2025, making storage economics compelling in nearly every major electricity market. In the UK alone, the first half of 2025 saw a 78% jump in battery storage project completions, with over 130 GWh of approved projects still to be built. Projects are getting larger: average submitted project size in the UK rose to 300 MWh, up from 230 MWh the year before, and 41% of new submissions exceeded 100 MW.

The technology mix is diversifying beyond lithium-ion batteries. Flow batteries are carving out a niche in long-duration storage, pumped hydro remains the largest source of installed storage capacity worldwide, and compressed air and gravity-based systems are entering commercial deployment. Each technology brings distinct skill requirements.

The skills bottleneck

The IEA's World Energy Employment 2025 report found that over half of 700 surveyed energy organisations face critical hiring bottlenecks. Battery and EV manufacturing alone added 800,000 jobs in 2024. Meeting 2030 workforce needs requires a 40% increase in qualified graduates entering the energy sector globally. Applied technical roles, including electricians and plant operators, face the steepest shortages. For professionals with transferable skills from oil and gas, power generation, or electrical engineering, energy storage offers strong demand and the premium that comes with sector-specific experience in grid integration, battery management systems, and energy trading.
