Hydrogen Infrastructure Jobs in Renewable Energy

Hydrogen infrastructure is everything between the electrolyser and the point of use: pipelines, compressors, salt cavern and vessel storage, tube trailers and liquefaction plant, and the refuelling stations that dispense the gas at 350 or 700 bar. It is a distinct field from making hydrogen, and it employs different people. Germany's approved core network runs to 9,040 kilometres of pipeline at a cost of 18.9 billion euros, to be brought into service in stages by 2032.

Conversion, not construction

The detail that shapes the work: around 60% of that network is existing natural gas pipe converted to hydrogen, and only 40% is newly built. Conversion is a materials problem before it is a civil engineering one. Hydrogen embrittles certain steels under pressure cycling, weld seams behave differently, and existing compressors rarely suit a gas with a third of methane's volumetric energy density, so they are replaced rather than adapted. Engineers who spent careers on gas transmission find most of their knowledge transfers and a specific slice of it does not, which is why integrity, metallurgy, and leak detection specialists are being hired faster than pipeline designers.

Storage splits the same way. Salt caverns can hold hydrogen at scale and a handful in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK already do, but cavern behaviour under fast cycling is still an open research question. Listings under this tag have included a doctoral post in rock mechanics for underground hydrogen storage, which is an unusually direct signal of where the uncertainty sits.

Fewer projects than announced

Be sceptical of pipeline figures quoted in press releases. The IEA now puts potential low-emissions hydrogen production for 2030 at 37 million tonnes a year, down from 49 Mtpa a year earlier, and only 9% of that project pipeline has taken a final investment decision. Capacity that is operational or firmly committed reaches 4.2 Mtpa by 2030. That is still a fivefold increase on 2024, and it means infrastructure hiring is concentrated in a small number of funded corridors rather than spread across the map of announcements.

Who is actually hiring

The largest employer under this tag by a wide margin is Plug Power, and most of its openings are field service technicians rather than engineers. They maintain fuel cell systems and hydrogen dispensing equipment at customer sites, including warehouse and automotive plants, from bases in Johnstown and Albany in New York, South Dakota, California, and Oregon. This is the part of the sector that already runs commercially: forklift fleets and captive refuelling, not intercontinental trade.

The European roster is smaller and more varied. BEN-Tec in Emsdetten designs hydrogen plant and hires CAD designers for it, GP Joule builds refuelling and generation projects out of Schleswig-Holstein, Gen2 Energy in Oslo and Horten works on hydrogen shipping, and ELYSE ENERGY develops e-fuel projects in France. Nel Hydrogen and Ohmium sit on the equipment side, where infrastructure work meets electrolyser supply. Commissioning specialists, automation and controls engineers, and field application engineers recur across all of them.

Skills that transfer

Process safety carries the most weight. Hydrogen's wide flammability range and invisible flame make zoning, detection, and purge procedures central rather than peripheral, and employers treat documented experience with ATEX or equivalent classification as a hard filter. Beyond that, the useful backgrounds are industrial gases, LNG, refinery utilities, and piping engineering, each of which already teaches high-pressure work under a safety case. Fuel cell and power-to-X experience helps on the demand side.

For anyone weighing a move into hydrogen, the practical filter is whether a prospective employer's projects have reached financial close. Nine per cent of the announced pipeline has, and that share, rather than any national strategy document, is what determines how many of these roles still exist in three years.
