Battery Manufacturing Jobs in Renewable Energy

Battery manufacturing is the production of cells, modules, and packs: mixing electrode slurry, coating and calendering metal foil, stacking or winding and filling cells with electrolyte, then formation cycling and ageing before finished cells are welded into modules. It is a process industry with semiconductor-grade cleanliness requirements, and it has little in common with assembling the battery storage systems those cells end up in.

The geography is lopsided. China produced more than 80% of the world's battery cells in 2025 according to the IEA, and holds an even larger share of cathode and anode active material. Europe and North America together make up most of the remainder, which is why every European cell plant that reaches production carries disproportionate weight for anyone building a career in the field. Europe is not competing on volume; it is competing on proximity to carmakers and grid storage integrators, and on not being exposed to a single trade route.

The plants that are actually running

Verkor started cell production at Bourbourg near Dunkirk in December 2025, a 16 GWh plant with around 1,200 direct jobs and a stated path to 50 GWh by 2030, supplying Renault. The counter-example is just as instructive. Northvolt filed for bankruptcy in March 2025 with roughly 5,000 employees, about 3,000 of them in Skellefteå, and the site passed to the American firm Lyten in a sale completed on 27 February 2026, with more than 600 additional workers planned over the following year. Anyone considering a move into cell production should read both stories: the sector hires in hundreds at a time, and it sheds jobs the same way when a ramp-up misses its yield targets.

Roles are named after the process step

Job titles in this field map onto the production line rather than onto engineering disciplines. Mixing Senior Engineer, Coating Senior Engineer, Formation Process Engineer, Electrolyte Mixing and Filling Technician, and Assembly Equipment Technician are all live postings, and each corresponds to one station where a specific defect mode is born. Coating thickness variation shows up as capacity spread months later. Moisture ingress during filling shows up as gassing. That traceability is why quality control roles here carry more authority than in general manufacturing: a yield point is worth more than a headcount.

Who hires and how people get in

Verkor recruits in Dunkirk and Grenoble, solid-state developers such as Factorial Energy hire process engineers alongside research staff, and equipment and analytics suppliers sell into every plant. The research route matters more here than in most industries: the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft runs the FFB pilot facility for cell production in Münster, which exists largely to train the process engineers German plants cannot recruit.

Chemical and process engineers transfer into cell manufacturing most easily, followed by people from pharmaceutical or semiconductor fabs who already understand dry rooms and statistical process control. The scarce skill is ramp-up experience: engineers who have taken a line from pilot to mass production once are recruited internationally, because Europe has produced very few of them. Second careers run onward into battery recycling, where the same process knowledge is applied in reverse.
