Energy Access Jobs in Renewable Energy

Energy access work gets electricity and clean energy services to people who lack them or cannot afford them, through off-grid solar, mini-grids, and grid extension, and through programmes that keep energy bills payable. The scale of the gap is still large: 666 million people had no electricity in 2023, and 85% of them live in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Off-grid solar and mini-grids

Most energy access jobs sit with companies that sell and service solar home systems, solar lanterns, and village-scale microgrids where the national grid will not arrive for years. The same World Bank tracking report finds that decentralised renewables provided 55% of new electricity connections in Sub-Saharan Africa between 2020 and 2022, and that off-grid solar is the cheapest option for 41% of the people still unconnected. The work is labour-intensive. Decentralised renewable energy supported close to half a million direct jobs worldwide in Power for All's 2022 census, and in Kenya solar companies employ at least six times as many workers as the national utility.

What the jobs actually are

The job titles on Rejobs show that the sector runs more like a consumer finance company than an engineering firm. Field sales consultants, area business managers, territory executives, and collections staff dominate, because customers typically pay for a solar kit in small instalments over a year or more on a pay-as-you-go plan, often through mobile money. Collections, credit risk, and customer lifecycle management are core functions, not back-office ones. Engineering roles exist, from system sizing and battery selection to firmware for remotely locked devices, but they are fewer and often based in Nairobi, Bengaluru, or a European headquarters rather than in the field.

Who hires

Sun King and d.light are among the largest pay-as-you-go solar companies, hiring sales, credit, and operations staff across East and West Africa and South Asia. BURN manufactures clean cookstoves in Kenya, a reminder that access covers cooking as well as light. SELCO Foundation in Bengaluru links solar power to health clinics, schools, and rural livelihoods, creating programme and field coordinator roles, while Okra Solar builds mesh-grid technology for remote villages in Southeast Asia. Project managers who can run donor reporting and monitoring alongside technical delivery, and who speak the local language, remain hard to find.

Affordability in Europe

In wealthy markets the same concept means affordability. 9.2% of the EU population could not keep their home adequately warm in 2024, rising to 19% in Bulgaria and Greece and 17.5% in Spain. That shapes hiring at suppliers such as Octopus Energy, Good Energy, and Ecotricity, which employ energy advisors and customer support teams to help households cut bills, and at community energy groups that share local solar output with low-income members.

Skills that stand out

The candidates employers compete for combine technical understanding with commercial sense: someone who can size a mini-grid and also design the tariff that makes it pay. Experience with results-based financing, carbon credit revenue, or productive use of energy, such as solar-powered irrigation and cold storage, moves a CV up the pile. The funding need is large, with an estimated $95 billion required to scale decentralised solutions, so the pace of hiring follows the pace of concessional finance more closely than it follows technology costs.
