Energy Consulting jobs in renewable energy

Energy Consulting Jobs in Renewable Energy

Energy consultants in renewable energy advise developers, investors, utilities, industrial companies, and public bodies on what to build, buy, or change, delivering studies, models, audits, and due diligence reports rather than running assets themselves.

The client is what defines the job. An engineer who models a grid connection for their own employer is doing power systems engineering; the same study sold to a developer who lacks the in-house team is consulting. That difference shapes the career: consultants see many projects, work to fees and deadlines set by someone else's decision, and are judged on whether the client acts on the report.

What energy consultants do

Technical advisory is the core of renewable consulting. Consultants assess wind and solar resources, review turbine and module contracts, check construction progress for lenders, and write the technical due diligence reports banks require before they finance a project. Titles such as Principal Wind Consultant or Senior Consultant Energy Storage in our listings come mostly from this branch, including senior posts in offshore wind advisory.

Strategy and market consulting sits at the other end. Consultants model future power prices, test business cases for batteries and hydrogen, and help utilities and industrial groups plan their decarbonisation. Energy modelling and simulation skills are the common currency, and junior strategy roles are built largely around scenario work that senior consultants then present to clients.

Efficiency and industrial advisory is where regulation drives demand most directly. Under the recast EU Energy Efficiency Directive, companies consuming more than 10 TJ of energy a year must complete an energy audit by 11 October 2026 and at least every four years unless they run an energy management system, which becomes compulsory above 85 TJ from October 2027. The obligation now follows energy use rather than company size, pulling many mid-sized manufacturers into scope, and they buy that work from energy auditing specialists and consultancies.

A title with two meanings

Job seekers should read postings carefully. In retail energy, "energy consultant" often means a sales role: selling rooftop solar, heat pumps, or electricity contracts to households and small businesses, frequently on commission. Czech listings for an energetický konzultant sit alongside genuine advisory posts, and Domestic Solar Sales Consultant roles in the UK follow the same pattern. These can be good jobs, but they are sales jobs, and the career path leads into sales management rather than advisory work.

Who is hiring

Our listings for this tag are spread thinly across many employers, a sign of how fragmented the market is. Equipment makers and energy service companies such as TEDOM, the Czech combined heat and power manufacturer, hire energy specialists to design solutions for clients. Energy service companies and utilities, among them GETEC green energy, Enexis, and Ecotricity, recruit advisers for their business customers. Hamburg, Berlin, London, Madrid, and Glasgow lead the locations.

Competition for places at the large firms is intense. In sustainability consulting, a close neighbour, firms often receive 1,000 to 5,000 applications for a single role, according to Trellis. What separates candidates is a demonstrable technical core, such as resource assessment, grid studies, energy modelling, or audit accreditation, combined with the ability to write a report a board will actually read.
