Production Planning Jobs in Renewable Energy

Production planning in renewable energy is the scheduling of factory output, line capacity, and materials for solar modules, turbine blades, batteries, electrolysers, and fuel cells, so that each line runs full and each customer shipment leaves on time. The job has grown with a wave of new factories: US solar module assembly capacity reached roughly 66 GW in the second quarter of 2026, according to SEIA and Wood Mackenzie data, up from about 51 GW at the start of 2025, although additions have since slowed sharply amid tariff and trade uncertainty.

What planners do

A production planner turns a sales forecast into a schedule that the plant can actually run. That means setting weekly and daily line plans, checking capacity against headcount and machine availability, and running material requirements planning so that glass, cells, resin, or cathode material arrive just before they are needed. What sets renewable energy factories apart is the product mix and the pace of change. A module factory can switch cell technology or module format within a year, and every change means new bills of materials, new yields, and new line balancing. Blade factories such as Vestas's plant in Nakskov plan around moulds that take a day or more per blade, so a single lost mould-day is visible in the delivery plan. Battery and electrolyser plants add ramp-up risk: a line that has never run at nameplate capacity has no reliable history to plan from, and the planner's forecast has to be updated as yields improve.

Key employers

US solar factories post most roles. Silfab Solar in Fort Mill, South Carolina, and Burlington, Washington, and Canadian Solar in Mesquite, Texas, and Jeffersonville, Indiana, hire planners, supervisors, and operators for module and cell lines. US module plans still depend heavily on imported cells, so customs clearance matters as much as line speed, and planners work closely with supply chain and logistics teams every day.

In Europe, the clusters are in Germany and France. Skeleton Technologies produces ultracapacitors in Markranstädt near Leipzig, Sunfire builds electrolysers in Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, and Verkor runs a battery cell plant in Dunkirk. The EU's Net-Zero Industry Act sets a benchmark for European factories to cover at least 40% of the EU's annual deployment needs for clean technologies by 2030, and every new line that follows from it needs a planning function.

Fusion developers Helion Energy in Everett, Washington, and Commonwealth Fusion Systems in Devens, Massachusetts, also hire production staff: both build components such as magnets and capacitor systems in-house, in small series where each unit is expensive and schedules are unforgiving.

Skills that pay

ERP and planning software fluency (SAP PP or similar), strong spreadsheet and data skills, and a grounding in lean methods are the baseline. Planners from automotive, electronics, or semiconductors transfer well, because the problems are the same ones at higher volume. The premium goes to people who have planned through a factory ramp-up, where capacity is uncertain and the plan changes weekly, and who understand the equipment well enough to challenge a yield assumption. That experience moves easily into operations management and plant leadership as new factories look for their first managers.
