Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager - Environment, the Environmental Operations & Compliance Advisor is responsible for ensuring that renewable energy operations comply with all applicable federal, state, and provincial environmental regulations. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Operations and Maintenance (O&M), Asset Management and other support teams to interpret and implement regulatory requirements, manage environmental monitoring programs, and support permitting and reporting obligations across Canadian and United States jurisdictions.
You will play an important role in
Regulatory Compliance & Permitting
- Monitor and interpret applicable environmental regulations and legislation, including federal and state- and provincial-level statutes governing renewable energy operations in Canada and the United States.
- Ensure operational activities comply with environmental permits, approvals, and applicable regulatory requirements including those issued by Canadian federal and provincial authorities (e.g., DFO, MELCCFP, MECP, BCER), and the EPA and state environmental agencies (e.g., USFWS, ORES, NYDEC).
- Coordinate, prepare, and submit environmental permit applications, regulatory filings, and compliance reports within required deadlines.
- Track legislative developments and regulatory changes affecting renewable energy operations, and communicate updates to the operations team.
- Liaise with federal, state, and provincial regulatory agencies to resolve compliance issues and support inspections or audits.
Environmental Monitoring & Reporting
- Design, implement, and oversee environmental monitoring programs for operating wind, solar, BESS and hydroelectric facilities, including air quality, water quality, noise, and wildlife monitoring.
- Manage third-party environmental consultants, including defining scopes of work, coordinating deliverables, reviewing technical reports, and ensuring work is completed on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with regulatory and company requirements.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret environmental monitoring data, and prepare accurate compliance and regulatory reports for submission to authorities.
- Maintain complete and organized environmental records in accordance with regulatory and corporate requirements.
- Conduct regular environmental audits and field inspections of operating sites to identify compliance gaps and implement corrective actions.
Environmental Management & Advisory
- Provide expert environmental guidance and advice to O&M and Asset Management teams to ensure environmental risks are proactively identified and managed.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Environmental Management Plans and associated procedures for operating renewable energy facilities.
- Support environmental risk assessments and incident investigations; recommend corrective and preventive measures accordingly.
- Contribute to the development of environmental training materials and provide training to operations staff on regulatory compliance requirements and best practices.
- Participate in the development and reporting of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) metrics and sustainability programs.
To succeed in this position, you need
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, or a related field.
- A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressive experience in an environmental advisory role, with demonstrated expertise in regulatory compliance.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian and US environmental regulations applicable to renewable energy operations (e.g., IAA, SARA, NEPA, CWA, ESA and relevant provincial/state-level regulations).
- Familiarity with Canadian federal and provincial environmental legislation (e.g., IAA, SARA, provincial energy and environmental acts) is an asset.
- Proven experience managing environmental permits and regulatory approvals for energy generation or infrastructure projects.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and report-writing skills with the ability to interpret complex regulatory documents.
- Strong understanding of the importance of health and safety requirements related to renewable energy assets, including active construction, operations, maintenance activities, and field-based environmental work.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with environmental data management systems is an asset.
- Responsible and effective use of AI tools to support research, analysis, documentation, and workflow efficiency is an asset.
- Bilingualism in French is an asset.
