Company Overview

Snowy Hydro Limited

NSW, Australia

1949

Approximately 1,000-5,000 employees (source: leadiq.com). Snowy Hydro is a wholly-owned Commonwealth company with no public revenue data available for 2023 or later.

What They Do

Snowy Hydro's core technology focus is on pumped hydro-electricity, gas-fired peaking, diesel peaking, and contracted wind and solar renewables. The company operates 16 power stations and one pumping station, boasting a total generating capacity of over 5,500 MW dispatched to the National Electricity Market (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which is a significant part of their operations, features nine hydro-electric power stations and 16 dams linked by 145 km of tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts, primarily located in Kosciuszko National Park. Additionally, Snowy Hydro manages water storage and diversion under the Snowy Water Licence for irrigation to the Murray and Murrumbidgee systems (source: wikipedia.org).

Projects & Track Record

Snowy Hydro has a rich history of notable projects, including the original Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which was completed in 1974 and delivered a total output of 3,740 MW from seven power stations, such as Guthega, which began operations in 1955 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The company also operates significant gas assets, including the Colongra Power Station (667 MW, acquired in 2015), Laverton North (320 MW), and Latrobe Valley (300 MW) in Victoria, along with three diesel stations in South Australia totaling 136 MW (source: wikipedia.org). Currently, major projects include Snowy 2.0, which aims to link the Tantangara and Talbingo dams via a 27 km underground tunnel and establish a new pumped-hydro station for 2,000 MW generation and 175 hours of storage, with construction having commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au).

Recent Developments

In March 2018, the Australian Government acquired full ownership of Snowy Hydro by purchasing shares from New South Wales and Victoria, solidifying its status as a wholly-owned Commonwealth entity (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The construction of Snowy 2.0 is a significant advancement in the company's portfolio, marking it as a nation-building pumped-hydro project that commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). Additionally, Snowy Hydro has secured contracts for over 1,000 MW from ten wind and solar projects, enhancing its renewable energy offerings (source: leadiq.com).

Working There

Snowy Hydro offers a diverse range of roles across various departments, including generation (hydro, gas, diesel operations), engineering, construction, and retail services through brands like Red Energy and Lumo Energy. The company also has opportunities in support functions such as IT, HR, and finance, with hiring occurring at their headquarters in Cooma, the Sydney office, and various project sites across New South Wales and Victoria (source: leadiq.com). The company culture emphasizes community support and has a long history of integrating a multinational workforce, with 65% of the original workforce being migrants from over 30 nations (source: nma.gov.au). Job Description

Snowy Hydro is a dynamic, integrated energy business that has been providing on-demand, reliable energy to Australia for generations. Snowy Hydro owns and operates a powerful combination of generation assets, including the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme, gas and diesel plants, and contracted wind and solar energy. We also provide electricity and gas to about 1.5 million retail customers through our retail brands Red Energy and Lumo Energy.

A full-time position exists for an experienced Project Engineer (Electrical) to join the Project Engineering stream.

About the position

As a skilled Project Engineer (Electrical) you will take technical ownership and lead the electrical technical workstream for projects. Serving as the Owner's Engineer within the Project Team, you will be responsible for providing professional judgment to oversee external design processes, ensuring that all technical deliverables are fit-for-purpose, compliant with SHL's long-term lifecycle models, and integrated into the project master plan. You will ensure the project complies with technical and design specifications, performance criteria, and regulatory requirements. This role involves covering the design management function for simple projects or a support role for complex projects led by a Senior Project Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical owner of electrical design packages and oversee the design lifecycle, ensuring consultants prioritise safety, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Perform and check complex calculations and designs, and verify the technical integrity of contractor submissions without the need for detailed supervision.
  • Act as the first point of resolution for technical conflicts, identify non-conformances, and escalate to the Senior or Principal Engineer for strategic governance.
  • Own the electrical technical baseline for simple projects and lead the authoring of "Scopes of Work" and technical specifications that drive procurement and vendor selection.
  • Drive field engineering support and provide technical guidance during commissioning to ensure the built asset aligns with the design intent.
  • Supervise technical staff and coordinate site-based contractors for assigned work packages.
  • Provide coaching and professional development guidance to Junior Engineers.

About the location

While this role is ideally based in Cooma, we know great talent can be found right across the peaks. For the right candidate, we're happy to explore a base at our Khancoban or Talbingo offices. You will be part of a dedicated local engineering team delivering key engineering advice to support Snowy Hydro's existing assets. This is a hybrid role with a minimum requirement of 3 days per week in an office, and will require travel across Snowy sites during project phases.

We're not just looking for a new team member; we're looking to help you make the Snowy Mountains your home. To ensure a smooth transition for the successful candidate and their family, relocation support is available for those interested in a move to Cooma (or agreed location).

About you

  • You must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years post-graduate experience, ideally within the power generation (hydro, gas, diesel), heavy industrial plant, or utility/power distribution sectors. Experience in design consultancies transitioning to an owner's side is also highly valued.
  • You possess advanced knowledge in power system design, including key electrical components such as HV generators, protection, earthing and LV distribution (both AC and DC). You are experienced in design management and procurement of LV/HV power systems, including switchgear and switchboard upgrades for greenfield and brownfield sites.
  • You possess intermediate controls and automation skills, specifically experience with the allen-bradley system (experience in general computer programming or AI is not required for this role) as well as experience in design and install of instrumentation.
  • You have the expert ability to develop, audit, and own work scopes, technical specifications, and complex drawings.
  • You have a proven ability to supervise and manage external contractors and consultants, ensuring technical compliance and lifecycle value.
  • You have the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and provide professional judgment on unusual project features.
  • You possess highly developed interpersonal and negotiating skills, with the ability to drive technical consensus among stakeholders.
  • You demonstrate strong management skills and the ability to drive engineering packages to completion independently.
  • You can monitor the design schedule and assist the Project Manager in evaluating Change Orders from a technical necessity standpoint.
  • You are committed to professional growth, seeking guidance, technical review, and coaching from Senior Engineers, while also providing coaching and guidance to Junior Engineers.
