Job Description

As a leader in advancing New York's energy transition, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has remained a credible, objective and trusted partner in our state's energy planning as well as deploying new and innovative technologies to expand New York's economy. NYSERDA has worked for the past 50 years to protect the environment and help New Yorkers increase energy efficiency, lower energy costs and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. NYSERDA engages with stakeholders including residents, business owners, developers, community leaders, local government officials, universities, utilities, investors, entrepreneurs, and more, to develop, invest, and foster conditions that:

  • Attract the private sector capital investment needed to expand New York's clean energy economy.
  • Overcome barriers to using clean energy at a large-scale in New York.
  • Enable New York's communities and residents to benefit equitably in the clean energy transition.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

This is a paid internship for current students at an accredited college. The pay rate is from $18 to $20 per hour based on current class year. This internship will begin in the Spring 2026 semester or Summer 2026 and has the potential to continue into the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters.

Interns must be in New York State or an immediately adjacent state while working. It is expected that interns will follow our telework policy, with a combination of in-office and remote work. Interns work up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week between semesters, when not attending classes.

The Data Solutions team seeks an intern who has interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Data Solutions team is part of NYSERDA's IT Department and supports teams across the Authority through data governance, data warehousing, open data, data visualization, and data mapping. Interns with an interest in understanding and implementing AI Policy to NYSERDA's business operations are encouraged to apply. The selected intern will gain skills using specialized AI software, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Jira, Confluence, and Tableau while learning about NYSERDA's breadth of program offerings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the implementation of NYSERDA's Artificial Intelligence strategy
  • Assess and mitigate potential risks associated with the development and deployment of AI technologies, while ensuring adherence to regulatory frameworks
  • Apply single or multiple (composite) AI techniques such as machine learning and natural language technologies, logic, and other concepts to solve business problems
  • Analyze systems to effectively monitor and control development projects
  • Use AI best practices regarding applications in data science, speech recognition and computer vision
  • Think through the unintended consequences of the use of data and AI, and determine how to manage risks and opportunities
  • Bridge the technical gap between the AI developers and the business users
  • Drive adoption and raise the level of AI literacy throughout the organization
  • Conceive and plan how AI will be consumed through the marketplace and ensure alignment with the needs of the business and compliance with regulatory, security and data governance requirements
  • Assist with AI-related presentations to a variety of stakeholders including the Public and the NYSERDA Executive team
  • Assist with the improvement and integration of automation and tools.
  • Create templates and manuals in support of AI tools and systems deployed
  • Ability to demonstrate respect, equity and inclusive behavior and practices of a diverse workforce and community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate student pursuing a degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, natural language processing, cognitive science, data science, policy, engineering, or other related field.
  • Excellent skills with the Microsoft Office suite of programs.
  • Experience with artificial intelligence software, ideally ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot.
  • Organized, highly detailed oriented.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
