What They Do
Otary is a private joint venture focused on renewable energy, specifically offshore wind energy. The company offers full lifecycle services, from development and financing to construction, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind farms (source: otary.be). Their main products and services include the management of offshore wind farms, including project development, turbine installation through partners such as DEME, and grid integration. Otary manages a portfolio totaling 800 MW, including the Rentel, Seastar, and Mermaid concessions, which together provide electricity for nearly 800,000 households (source: otary.be). The company primarily serves the Belgian North Sea and focuses on Belgian energy companies, households, and grid operators through concessions and power purchase agreements (source: windeurope.org). Otary distinguishes itself through its local consortium model, leveraging combined expertise in dredging, engineering, and green energy, and manages more than a third of Belgium's total offshore wind capacity (source: oceanwinds.com).
Projects & Track Record
Otary has completed several notable projects, including the Rentel wind farm, which was commissioned in September 2018 with 42 turbines and a total capacity of 309 MW, providing enough energy for 300,000 Belgian households (source: windeurope.org). Additionally, the SeaMade wind farm, which combines the Seastar and Mermaid zones, has been fully operational since late 2020 with 58 Siemens turbines with a capacity of 487 MW, supplying power to up to 485,000 households (source: wikipedia.org). These projects form an integrated portfolio of 800 MW, with the Rentel transformer platform also exporting power from adjacent projects such as SeaMade and Northwester 2 (source: otary.be). Otary has not detailed any major ongoing construction projects but offers lifecycle services for its assets (source: renewables.digital).
Recent Developments
In the past two years, Otary announced a significant strategic consortium on July 12, 2024, alongside Eneco and Ocean Winds, to bid on the offshore wind concessions of Princess Elisabeth in Belgium. This consortium leverages the operational experience of 800 MW for competitive pricing and local employment, amid tight timelines and grid challenges (source: oceanwinds.com). No acquisitions, mergers, or funding rounds have been reported in 2024 or 2025, and specific pricing or certifications have not been documented in recent sources (source: windeurope.org). Key milestones include maintaining the role as an ambassador in Belgium's energy transition, with CEO Mathias Verkest highlighting the status of a center of excellence from over a decade of consortium work (source: investmentreports.co).
Working at Otary
Otary employs approximately 30 staff members, indicating a compact team focused on specialized offshore wind roles such as project development, engineering, operation and maintenance (O&M), finance, and stakeholder management (source: zoominfo.com). Recruitment activities appear to concentrate at the headquarters in Ostend, with no specified opportunities for remote or other locations (source: zoominfo.com). The company culture emphasizes a collaborative model focused on close ties with stakeholders and delivering projects on time and within budget through talented employees and subcontractors (source: otary.be). No specific benefits packages have been publicly documented, but the consortium structure implies potential benefits from shareholders such as DEME, which has 5,200 employees worldwide (source: windeurope.org).
