Job Description

Fuse Energy is a forward-thinking renewable energy startup on a mission to deliver a terawatt of renewable energy - fast. We're combining first-principles thinking with cutting-edge technology to build a radically better energy system. We raised $170M from top-tier investors including Multicoin, Balderton, Lakestar, Accel, Creandum, Lowercarbon, Ribbit, Box Group and strategic angels like Nico Rosberg, the Co-Founder of Solana and GPs behind Meta, Revolut, Spotify, Uber and more.

We're creating a fully integrated energy company: from developing solar, wind and hydrogen projects to real-time power trading and distributed energy installations. By selling directly to consumers, we cut out the middleman, lower costs and pass on savings to customers.

But we're not stopping there. We're also building the Energy Network: a decentralised platform of smart devices that rewards users in Energy Dollars for electrifying their homes, shifting usage to off-peak hours, and helping balance the grid. This network strengthens grid stability - a critical foundation for scaling AI data centers and other energy-intensive industries.

Purpose

The Engineering Manager will lead all engineering and design activities across the UK utility-scale solar and BESS portfolio, from early-stage development through construction and commissioning.

This role is responsible for delivering robust, bankable, and cost-optimised designs, aligned with grid requirements, planning constraints, and construction best practices. The position will act as the technical authority across projects, leading internal engineering capability and managing external consultants to ensure high-quality, repeatable, and scalable project delivery.

This position reports to the Head of Projects.

Responsibilities we will trust you with

Engineering Leadership

  • Lead the engineering function across utility-scale solar and BESS projects in the UK
  • Define and implement standards, processes, and best practices
  • Act as technical authority across development, EPC, and operations
  • Build and scale internal engineering capability
  • Allocate resources across a multi-project pipeline

Project Delivery

  • Oversee engineering from development through commissioning
  • Ensure designs are optimised for cost, constructability, and performance
  • Manage external consultants to ensure quality and timely delivery
  • Support handover into construction and provide delivery-phase support

Technical Oversight

  • Oversee system design, including layouts, DC/AC, and HV infrastructure
  • Ensure integration of substations, grid connections, protection systems, and SCADA
  • Review grid requirements, connection agreements, and planning conditions
  • Oversee grid studies and key engineering deliverables (SLDs, layouts, specs, BoQs)
  • Ensure robust BOS design and material optimisation
  • Provide technical input into EPC strategy and procurement

Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure compliance with UK Grid Code, G99/G100, and relevant standards
  • Maintain alignment with HSE requirements and industry best practices
  • Stay current with evolving regulatory and technical requirements

Stakeholder Management

  • Act as key technical interface for internal teams, lenders, and partners
  • Support technical due diligence and manage independent engineers
  • Collaborate across development, construction, and asset management

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive standardisation across designs, specifications, and processes
  • Lead initiatives to improve efficiency, cost, and project performance
  • Act as escalation point for complex technical challenges

Requirements

Your areas of knowledge and expertise

  • 7-10+ years of experience in engineering within the renewable energy sector, with a strong focus on utility-scale solar and BESS projects
  • Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams and external consultants
  • Track record of delivering large-scale solar projects from development through to energisation
  • Strong understanding of UK grid connection processes, including DNO/TSO requirements
  • Deep knowledge of utility-scale PV system design, including DC, AC, and HV infrastructure
  • Experience with substations, protection & control systems, and SCADA integration
  • Experience supporting construction and commissioning of utility-scale projects
  • Strong understanding of cost optimisation and capex drivers in project design
  • Experience with industry-standard tools (e.g. AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope or equivalent)
  • Ability to review, challenge, and optimise complex engineering designs and assumptions

As a person

  • Strategic mindset with strong commercial awareness
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Ability to operate at both strategic and hands-on technical levels
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple large-scale projects concurrently
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented, and comfortable operating in a high-growth environment
