Job Description
Climate Central is seeking a media savvy writer and associate producer with experience in science communication. This person will help create reporting resources on a range of topics related to climate change impacts and solutions to help our network tell timely, relevant, and accurate stories about our warming planet. This work will take shape in writing, videos, and data visualizations, so comfort with different forms of communication is key. Reporting to the vice president for content creation, the writer and associate producer will join an interdisciplinary team of communications professionals, writers, graphic designers, scientists, and technologists and will work across programs and projects at the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Writing and research
- Research and write assigned science explainer briefs for media professionals and other audiences.
- Help identify and develop newsworthy topics to cover, based on media trends, available data, and established or emerging science.
- Connect with appropriate subject matter experts to enhance topical research and support subsequent media engagement for briefs we publish.
- Assist with writing and editing across programs and departments.
Multimedia production
- Co-produce and edit videos (e.g., shorts, interviews, science explainers, and webinars).
- Co-develop data visualizations (e.g., charts, graphs, maps, infographics) that communicate scientific concepts and analytical results for a broad audience.
- Collaborate with colleagues on content creation for social media and media engagement.
Project coordination
- Coordinate across teams to achieve timely completion of assigned projects.
- Maintain and update internal project management tracking systems for assignments.
Required Skills and Experiences
- Strong independent research and analytical skills, which may be grounded in a variety of disciplines including journalism, STEM, social sciences, or humanities
- Able to synthesize background research and data analyses
- Experience communicating complex information in written and visual formats that are accurate, clear, concise, and broadly accessible
- Demonstrated experience in video production, from storyboarding and scripting to editing and publishing
- Experience using video and design software, which may include Premiere Pro, InDesign, Photoshop, Riverside, and/or Canva
- Demonstrated interest in climate change, environmental science, climate policy, journalism, or science communication
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member, with colleagues of varied backgrounds and experiences
- Strong organizational skills and time management skills, including the ability to balance and advance multiple projects simultaneously
Preferred Skills and Experience
- 3-5 years of professional experience in science communications, either as journalist, writer, or producer
- Creativity and a willingness to experiment with new datasets, platforms, technologies, and resources
- Comfort working in a remote-first environment, which requires regular virtual meetings and asynchronous communication
- Experience delivering work on deadline in a fast-paced, collaborative atmosphere
- Fluency with Slack, G Suite, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Compensation
The expected base salary range for this position is $72,000-75,000. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Climate Central offers generous benefits including:

Location and employment eligibility
This position can be mostly remote, in accordance with Climate Central organizational policy. Presence at headquarters or other U.S.-based locations is required for periodic team and organizational meetings, events and convenings. Climate Central's headquarters are in Princeton, NJ. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States.
