Company Overview

Carbon Market Watch

Brussels, Belgium

2009

Approximately 20 employees (source: carbonmarketwatch.org).

What They Do

Carbon Market Watch is an independent, not-for-profit watchdog and research organization dedicated to scrutinizing carbon markets, emissions trading systems, and related climate policies to ensure their environmental integrity and fairness (source: carbonmarketwatch.org). Operating as a project of Nature Code, it advocates at various levels including the UN, European Union, and Global South, without engaging in renewable energy production or technology deployment (source: idealist.org). The organization focuses on monitoring and critiquing carbon pricing mechanisms, producing research reports, and engaging in advocacy efforts to influence policy decisions (source: carbonmarketwatch.org). Its target markets include policymakers, governments, corporations, and civil society, emphasizing a unique position as a non-industry voice in the carbon market landscape.

Projects & Track Record

Carbon Market Watch does not engage in commercial projects but focuses on advocacy campaigns and research initiatives. Notable efforts include advocating for stronger civil society participation in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and influencing EU and UN policy changes regarding carbon offsets since its inception in 2009 (source: idealist.org). In recent years, it has successfully influenced the shelving of premature EU carbon removals proposals and analyzed the use of ETS revenue in countries like Greece, Portugal, and Belgium (source: carbonmarketwatch.org). Ongoing projects include scrutiny of the EU-ETS2 for transport and buildings, Article 6 carbon credits, and the development of the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (source: carbonmarketwatch.org).

Recent Developments

In 2023, Carbon Market Watch published its annual report highlighting its advocacy on the EU 'Fit for 55' package, improvements in voluntary carbon market integrity, and tracking of ETS revenue (source: carbonmarketwatch.org). The organization has not undergone any acquisitions or mergers, relying instead on grants for funding, and has continued to grow its team, notably hiring experts in voluntary markets (source: carbonmarketwatch.org). In 2022, it reported a doubling of its staff size since 2019 and restructured its internal operations to separate financial and HR functions (source: carbonmarketwatch.org).

Working There

Carbon Market Watch employs a small team of policy experts, executive leadership, and administrative support, with roles focusing on areas such as EU carbon markets and global carbon markets (source: carbonmarketwatch.org). The organization has experienced growth in hiring, particularly in policy and market expertise, at its Brussels headquarters (source: carbonmarketwatch.org). The culture at Carbon Market Watch emphasizes collaboration, transparency, and democratic governance, with staff enjoying a vibrant life in Brussels, engaging in activities like cycling and gardening (source: carbonmarketwatch.org).
