Company Overview

Greenely AB

Stockholm, Sweden

2014

Approximately 40 employees (source: zoominfo.com). Revenue estimated at $8.4 million in 2023 (source: zoominfo.com).

What They Do

Greenely is a pioneering Swedish energy technology company that specializes in smart energy management solutions. Founded as a spinoff from a master's thesis at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the company has developed a cloud-based platform that aggregates real-time data from smart meters and various device APIs, including EV chargers and solar inverters. This innovative approach allows for automated optimization of household energy use through AI-driven scheduling, enabling users to save significantly on their energy bills (source: techcrunch.com). Greenely's offerings include a freemium mobile app that provides insights into energy consumption, transparent billing, and personalized recommendations, which can lead to cost savings of 10-20% for users.

Projects & Track Record

Greenely has successfully completed several notable projects, including a pilot study in collaboration with Stanford University in California, which focused on user behavior regarding electricity consumption. This project was partially funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and marked the company's initial foray into international collaborations. In Sweden, Greenely has rolled out its services in partnership with local utilities such as Karlstad Energi and Bixia, serving an initial cohort of households since 2018 (source: yongkyung-oh.github.io). The company is currently expanding its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program, which was launched in December 2023, and is set to include home batteries and EV chargers, enhancing its service offerings for over 200,000 households.

Recent Developments

In the past two years, Greenely has made significant strides in funding and expansion. In July 2024, the company closed an €8 million (90 MSEK) Series A funding round led by Korys, which will be used to enhance its VPP capabilities and expand into Nordic markets, particularly Norway and Finland (source: techcrunch.com). Earlier, in July 2021, Greenely raised €1.8 million to support its entry into the UK market. The company is also focusing on developing intraday trading capabilities and has received recognition for its innovative approach, including Forbes 30 under 30 accolades for its CEO, Tanmoy Bari.

Working There

Greenely offers a dynamic work environment with roles spanning engineering, product management, and business development. The company is actively hiring to support its growth, particularly in the Nordic region, and emphasizes attracting top-tier talent for its expanding team of approximately 40 employees (source: arctictoday.com). Greenely's culture is rooted in innovation and problem-solving, supported by KTH's startup ecosystem, which provides resources and mentorship. While specific benefits are not extensively documented, the company positions itself as a competitive player in Sweden's startup scene, likely offering flexible work arrangements and a supportive environment for its employees.

Job Description

Greenely is on a mission to make energy smarter, greener, and more accessible. We build technology that helps households understand, optimize, and reduce their energy usage - contributing to a more sustainable future.

Our products sit at the intersection of real-time data, consumer experience, and energy infrastructure. That means the engineering challenges we tackle are both complex and impactful.

The role

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who thinks beyond tickets and implementations - someone who naturally leans into architecture, system design, and long-term technical direction.

This role is not about writing the most code. It's about making the right technical decisions, shaping systems that scale, and guiding how we build - especially as we explore AI-driven and agentic systems within our platform.

You'll work closely with product, data, and other engineers to design robust solutions where tradeoffs are real, constraints matter, and decisions have lasting impact.

What you'll do

  • Own and drive architecture decisions across services and systems
  • Design systems that are scalable, resilient, and cost-aware
  • Act as a technical sounding board for engineers across teams
  • Work hands-on when needed, but focus on direction over volume
  • Evaluate and introduce patterns for AI agents and automation workflows
  • Identify bottlenecks and proactively improve system performance and reliability
  • Balance speed vs. quality, short-term delivery vs. long-term sustainability

Who you are

You bring a senior mindset - you've seen things break, scaled systems, and understand why "best practices" are often context-dependent.

You likely:

  • Have extensive experience designing and building systems in the cloud (AWS preferred)
  • Understand caching strategies, databases, and distributed systems - and their tradeoffs
  • Have worked with real production systems where performance, cost, and reliability mattered
  • Have experienced failure modes (and learned from them)
  • Think in systems, not just services
  • Integrate AI agents and automation into your daily workflows to drive tangible impact on delivery
  • Prefer ownership and agency over rigid processes

Technical depth we value

We don't expect everything, but strong experience in several of:

  • Cloud architecture & infrastructure design
  • Designing and building robust distributed systems, distributed business transactions, and stateless compute pipelines
  • Data storage (SQL/NoSQL), caching layers (Redis, etc.)
  • Observability, monitoring, and debugging production systems
  • Performance optimization and cost efficiency
  • Event-driven systems and asynchronous workflows
  • AI/ML systems and agent-based tooling
  • Experience working with data and streaming pipelines, Kafka / Spark, etc

How you work

  • You take initiative and move problems forward without waiting for permission
  • You ask "why" before jumping to solutions
  • You've built enough to know that tradeoffs > perfection
  • You communicate clearly with both engineers and non-engineers
  • You care about building things that actually work - in production, over time

Why Greenely

  • Work on real-world problems tied to energy, sustainability, and climate impact
  • Be part of a team where engineering decisions matter
  • High ownership, low bureaucracy
  • A culture that values pragmatism, curiosity, and continuous improvement

If you're the kind of engineer who naturally steps back to see the bigger picture - and then steps in to shape it - we'd like to talk.
