ABOUT THE ROLE
We are excited to have a new role for a Learning Systems & Instructional Design Specialist at TransAlta. This position is a full-time permanent role based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
Playing a critical part in shaping how learning is delivered across TransAlta, you'll bring together enterprise‑level LMS expertise and modern instructional design to create impactful, scalable learning experiences.
This role sits at the intersection of systems, content, and governance. As the owner of TransAlta's learning ecosystem, you will oversee LMS configuration, integrations, data quality, and compliance, while also designing engaging digital learning solutions that directly support business priorities and performance outcomes.
You will be instrumental in establishing and sustaining governance frameworks, standardised processes, and content lifecycle management and ensuring learning remains relevant, accessible, and measurable over time.
Working within a broader L&D ecosystem, this role partners closely with subject matter experts, HR, IT, and external vendors. The focus is on strategic system optimisation, governance, and priority learning initiatives, rather than end‑to‑end production of all learning content.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Partner with business leaders, HR, IT, and SMEs to identify performance gaps and define measurable learning objectives
- Align learning solutions to organisational priorities, including safety, compliance, and operational performance
- Influence adoption of standardised learning systems, processes, and governance frameworks
- Design and develop high‑quality digital learning solutions (eLearning, microlearning, blended) using modern authoring tools
- Apply adult learning principles, accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA), and instructional design methodologies
- Package and deploy learning content using SCORM/xAPI/AICC standards with validated tracking and reporting
- Configure and administer LMS components including catalogues, curricula, programmes, and assignments
- Maintain LMS data integrity, system performance, security, and user access
- Manage LMS integrations with HRIS and other enterprise systems to enable seamless learner experiences
- Establish and sustain BAU processes for intake, prioritisation, and content lifecycle management
- Lead release management, QA, and change control for learning systems and content
- Define and report on learning effectiveness metrics, translating insights into continuous improvement and adoption initiatives
ABOUT YOU
- Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, HR, Information Systems, Communications, or a related field
- 5-7 years of progressive experience in enterprise LMS administration and digital learning design, preferably in a corporate or regulated environment
- Proven experience deploying and managing SCORM/AICC/xAPI content, compliance reporting, and audit support
- Hands‑on experience with SAP SuccessFactors Learning
- Experience with modern learning tools such as SAP Enable Now, Articulate Storyline and Rise, Camtasia, or Adobe Captivate
- Advanced proficiency in LMS platforms, including system configuration, reporting, content management, and integrations
- Strong technical knowledge of eLearning standards, HRIS data models, SSO, data privacy, and security protocols
- Solid understanding of instructional design methodologies and adult learning principles
- Strong analytical, project management, and problem‑solving skills, with experience using data and dashboards to drive improvement
- Excellent customer service and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and support change and adoption initiatives
