What They Do

Terra-Gen focuses on renewable energy production, specializing in utility-scale projects across the United States. The company has a diverse portfolio that includes wind, solar, and battery energy storage technologies, providing comprehensive services from development and financing to construction and ongoing operations and maintenance of large-scale energy assets (source: terra-gen.com). Their offerings include operational wind farms and solar photovoltaic facilities, which are often paired with lithium-ion battery storage, totaling 5.1 GWh across various sites. This integrated approach allows them to supply dispatchable renewable power, enhancing grid resiliency for utility customers (source: cbinsights.com). Terra-Gen's target market primarily consists of utilities connected to major grids, such as California's CAISO and Texas, where they deliver renewable energy solutions that meet the growing demand for sustainable power (source: igneoip.com).

Projects & Track Record

Terra-Gen has successfully completed several notable projects, including the Edwards Sanborn Solar and Battery Storage Project located in Kern County, California. This expansive project spans 4,600 acres and boasts an impressive solar capacity of 807 MW, along with over 3 GWh of storage, which became operational in phases between 2022 and 2023. The project is capable of supplying up to 1,300 MW to the CAISO grid and was recognized with the 2024 Presidential Federal Sustainability Award (source: cbinsights.com). Additionally, Terra-Gen operates the largest wind farm in the U.S., alongside a portfolio of 26-32 facilities that collectively generate between 2.4-3.9 GW of wind and solar power, complemented by 5.1 GWh of storage capacity (source: terra-gen.com). The company is also actively expanding its operations, with future phases of the Edwards Sanborn project expected to add 2,000 MW of solar and storage capacity, as well as a pipeline of additional wind and solar projects that have been in development since 2020 (source: terra-gen.com).

Recent Developments

In recent years, Terra-Gen has undergone significant changes, including the acquisition of a 50% stake by Masdar from Energy Capital Partners in 2024. This strategic move has enabled the company to expand its operating capacity to approximately 3.8-3.9 GW, including 5.1 GWh of storage across 30 sites, thereby supporting its ambitions for growth in the U.S. renewable energy market (source: terra-gen.com). Additionally, SCOR provided insurance coverage for the Edwards Sanborn project's expansions in February 2025, underscoring the project's importance in California's clean energy transition (source: cbinsights.com). Since 2020, under the management of Igneo Infrastructure Partners, Terra-Gen has successfully added over 1 GW of capacity and 5 GWh of storage, further solidifying its position in the renewable energy sector (source: terra-gen.com).

Working There

Terra-Gen employs a diverse range of professionals across various functions, including development, financing, construction, operations, and maintenance. Key roles include executive positions such as the CFO, John O'Connor, and departments focused on engineering, project management, environmental health and safety, and renewable technologies encompassing wind, solar, and storage (source: rocketreach.co). The company primarily hires at its San Diego headquarters and project sites located in California and Texas, with plans for further expansion into other U.S. states. Terra-Gen promotes a culture of ethical operations, community engagement, and environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of local involvement and safety in its operations (source: terra-gen.com). Job Description

The Lead Network Engineer is responsible for serving as the senior technical authority for enterprise and OT network infrastructure, establishing architecture standards, and leading the design and integration of secure, reliable network solutions across utility-scale renewable energy systems. This role drives system reliability, telemetry accuracy, and long-term network modernization while ensuring compliance with NERC CIP, ISO/RTO, and cybersecurity requirements, and providing technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned as needed)

  • Design and architect secure, scalable enterprise and operational technology (OT) network infrastructures for new renewable energy sites, including wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems.
  • Develop standardized Layer III network architectures, including dynamic routing protocols, inter-VLAN routing, redundancy strategies, and high-availability designs for complex, multi-site environments.
  • Evaluate existing network architectures across the fleet, identify design deficiencies, and develop strategic improvement and modernization plans to enhance resiliency, scalability, and security.
  • Serve as the technical authority for Cisco and Hirschmann routing and switching platforms, ensuring configurations align with enterprise architecture standards and operational requirements.
  • Lead the design and implementation of fleetwide network and security technologies, including identity and access management (SSO), Cisco firewall platforms, and network monitoring/visibility tools to enhance security, standardization, and operational insight across all sites.
  • Design, implement, and optimize firewall rule sets and network access control policies across the fleet, ensuring proper segmentation, least-privilege access, and alignment with cybersecurity best practices.
  • Ensure all network designs and modifications comply with applicable NERC CIP standards, cybersecurity controls, and industry best practices.
  • Conduct architecture reviews for new site integrations, major upgrades, and infrastructure expansions to ensure consistency and long-term sustainability.
  • Collaborate with SCADA engineering, cybersecurity, IT, operations, and external vendors to align network infrastructure with telemetry, control system, and enterprise data requirements.
  • Develop and maintain enterprise network standards, IP addressing schemes, configuration templates, and documentation frameworks.
  • Lead root cause analysis of complex network issues and implement long-term corrective design solutions rather than temporary fixes.
  • Develop and enforce enterprise standards, templates, and deployment strategies to support consistent, scalable rollout of network infrastructure and security technologies across the fleet.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to network engineers while maintaining architectural governance across all projects.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives to support long-term network modernization and fleet-wide standardization efforts.
  • Adhere to all Terra-Gen safety policies, procedures, and standards while actively contributing to the continuous improvement of the Terra-Gen safety culture.
  • Promote a strong safety-first mindset by identifying hazards, following established safe work practices, and supporting operational excellence across all activities.
  • Take immediate and appropriate corrective action in response to emergency situations to minimize safety risks, equipment damage, and operational downtime.
  • Participate in the department's on-call support rotation.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% or more if required.
