About the Role

TransAlta is seeking a Hydro Supervisor to support our North Saskatchewan River (NSR) and Small Hydro facilities.

Based out of Drayton Valley, Alberta, this role leads the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of 13 hydro facilities across Canada, including sites in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario.

This position provides leadership to operations and maintenance teams, overseeing performance, safety, and asset reliability across the fleet. This is a high-impact leadership role with responsibility across multiple sites, requiring strong collaboration, operational insight, and decision-making capability.

This is a full-time, safety-sensitive position. Successful completion of pre-employment testing is required as a condition of employment.

A Day in the Life

  • Foster and maintain a proactive safety culture, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and corporate requirements
  • Provide frontline leadership to operations and maintenance personnel and contractors
  • Coach, mentor, and develop team members to build capability and engagement
  • Lead weekly planning and prioritization processes to ensure the right work is identified, scoped, and executed
  • Drive execution discipline across the work management cycle, ensuring plans translate into safe, efficient field work
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Dam Safety, Planning, HES, and Capital teams to align work priorities and resolve issues
  • Ensure all work is executed in accordance with TransAlta processes, standards, and procedures
  • Lead integrated operations and maintenance execution across the fleet
  • Optimize outage planning and execution to minimize lost production and maximize revenue opportunities
  • Manage equipment, tooling, inventory, and contractor/vendor performance
  • Provide input into asset plans, mid-range forecasts (MRF), and budgets based on equipment condition, risk, and performance
  • Monitor and manage operational and maintenance performance against business plan targets
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support and execute emergency response drills and preparedness activities
  • Ensure all applicable regulatory, environmental, and compliance requirements are met
  • Promote operator ownership and continuous improvement, encouraging employees to identify and drive improvements
  • Build strong working relationships across teams, functions, and stakeholders
  • Uphold TransAlta values and maintain positive stakeholder relations

About You

  • Engineering degree, technical diploma, or Red Seal (single/dual ticket)
  • 3-5 years of people leadership experience in operations, maintenance, or project environments
  • Experience in power generation (hydro preferred)
  • Strong understanding of maintenance practices, work management, and operational execution
  • Proven ability to manage contractors and vendors
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Lead teams and deliver results in a dynamic environment
    • Build and execute operational and business plans
    • Monitor and analyze performance and manage risk
    • Develop people through coaching and mentorship
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage broad audiences
  • Willing and able to travel regularly across Alberta, BC, and Ontario sites
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License
