What They Do
Ameresco has transitioned from a focus on energy efficiency and conservation to a comprehensive energy infrastructure solutions provider. Their offerings include upgrades to aging infrastructure, smart energy efficiency implementations, and the development, construction, and operation of distributed energy resources such as renewable energy plants. This product-neutral and supplier-independent approach allows them to effectively address both energy supply and demand (source: ameresco.com). Their core technology focus encompasses energy efficiency, infrastructure upgrades, asset sustainability, and renewable energy solutions, including solar photovoltaic operations and maintenance, biogas-to-energy plants, and more (source: ir.ameresco.com). Target markets for Ameresco include federal, state, and local governments, utilities, data centers, educational and healthcare institutions, housing authorities, and commercial/industrial customers across North America and Europe (source: members.naesco.org).
Projects & Track Record
Ameresco has a notable track record of energy-saving projects across various sectors, including government, healthcare, education, and commercial clients. One of their pioneering projects was the establishment of one of the first green biogas-to-energy power plants in Massachusetts in 2001. They currently manage over 150 megawatts of solar facilities, showcasing their capabilities in renewable energy (source: ir.ameresco.com). Ongoing major projects include the £1 billion Bristol City Leap Partnership in the UK, a city-wide decarbonization initiative that is projected to create over 1,000 local jobs and generate £61 million in social value within its first five years (source: ir.ameresco.com). Their geographic presence spans the US, Canada, the UK, and broader Europe, supported by over 50 offices (source: ameresco.com).
Recent Developments
In the last two years, Ameresco has focused on operational scaling rather than major new contracts or acquisitions explicitly dated post-2023. A December 2, 2025 company page update reaffirmed its NYSE:AMRC status and portfolio expansion into net-zero decarbonization (source: ameresco.com). Earlier acquisitions, such as Plug Smart, have integrated key staff into leadership roles, enhancing their Midwest presence and capabilities in smart building solutions (source: wbjournal.com). While no new mergers or funding rounds have been specified from 2024-2025, Ameresco has received historical recognitions, including rankings in the Boston Business Journal and Forbes 100 Best Small Companies (source: ir.ameresco.com).
Working There
Ameresco offers a variety of roles across different departments, including energy professionals, construction and operations, management, and marketing. Hiring occurs at their headquarters in Framingham, MA, as well as over 50 regional offices across North America and Europe (source: ir.ameresco.com). Our comprehensive portfolio is built to address the challenges of today and adapt the future, ensuring long-term sustainability and success for our customers.
Ameresco currently has an opening for a Project Engineer to join our Federal Engineering Team and help develop and deliver distributed energy, microgrid, and energy efficiency projects for federal customers. This role is ideal for an engineer who brings strong technical fundamentals, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for advancing innovative energy solutions from early development through construction and commissioning. This is a remote role with some travel required.
In this role, you will work closely with internal engineering, project management, and business stakeholders to support the development and execution of projects involving solar PV, battery energy storage, microgrids, and other distributed energy technologies. The ideal candidate is technically strong, detail-oriented, adaptable, and motivated by the opportunity to contribute to complex, high-impact energy infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Support the development, design, and implementation of distributed energy resource (DER) projects, with a particular focus on solar PV, battery energy storage, and microgrids.
- Conduct site visits to customer facilities to gather project information, assess existing conditions, and support technical evaluations.
- Perform engineering analyses to develop preliminary system layouts, estimate energy production, and prepare conceptual cost estimates.
- Assist in the preparation of conceptual and detailed engineering design packages, including scopes of work, drawings, narratives, and technical specifications.
- Develop requests for proposals and support the evaluation of third-party engineering firms across electrical, civil, and geotechnical disciplines.
- Support the evaluation of subcontractor bids and equipment vendor proposals to help determine best-value selections based on performance, cost, constructability, and warranty considerations.
- Prepare technical content for project proposals, reports, and presentations, clearly communicating project progress, key challenges, and recommended solutions.
- Help manage project changes and technical interventions to support successful project outcomes.
- Provide engineering support throughout all phases of the project lifecycle, including proposal development, design, construction, commissioning, and operations.
- Collaborate with Ameresco teams to develop project commissioning approaches and support successful system startup and turnover.
- Identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements at customer facilities and help ensure project scopes align with guaranteed energy and performance objectives.
- Ensure designs and project recommendations meet customer needs and comply with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and industry best practices.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, customers, subcontractors, and external partners.
- Partner with Project Managers to support customer communications, project coordination, status updates, and resolution of design and construction-phase issues.
- Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to support quality control and help ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in alignment with customer expectations.
- Travel as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

- Minimum of 5 years of experience in an engineering, project development, or related technical role.
- Ability to review confidential U.S. security information.
Additional Qualifications
- Experience supporting projects involving solar PV, battery energy storage systems, cogeneration, microgrids, and power systems.
- Experience using whole-building energy modeling and/or solar PV modeling software.
- Experience supporting the construction phase of project development.
- Working knowledge of engineering principles related to other energy technologies such as boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, building automation systems, building envelope systems, and water/steam distribution systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information clearly to a range of stakeholders.
- Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE), or progress toward PE licensure.
- Valid driver's license issued by state of residence and in good standing.

In addition to base pay, employees receive a comprehensive benefits package, such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off, and may be eligible for performance incentives, bonuses, commissions, or equity, depending on the role.
