Position Summary
Meter Operations Trainee is an entry level wage scale position with a line of progression leading to Apprentice Meterman, Journeyman Meterman, Journeyman Instrument Tester, and Foreman Electric Meter. Meter Operations is responsible for the testing and maintenance of all metering sites used to measure the energy consumed by residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Trainees will be responsible for Electric Meter Shop functions in addition to field functions.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Tests and maintains all electric metering equipment installed in the field
- Performs accuracy tests of all electric meter types in shop
- Tests current and voltage metering transformers
- Replace all electric meter types
- Fabricates metering for large commercial accounts
- Responds to and remediates metering emergencies in field
- Maintains, receives, issues all electric meter types
- Responds to customer complaints
- Communicate with both residential and commercial customers in field
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
- Must pass Mechanical, Reading and Math Aptitude test to be considered for an interview
- A valid Texas driver's license with a history of safe driving record in accordance with CPS Energy policies, procedures, safety standards and applicable laws and regulations.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
- Ability to utilize multiple types of hand tools and field equipment
- Ability to work in and around energized equipment
- Ability to climb ladders and work from elevated position
- Ability to work in confined spaces when necessary
- Ability to read, write, and understand verbal and written instructions
- Ability to read and understand equipment manuals
- Ability to understand safety and company policies and standards
- Ability to distinguish color
- Ability to effectively communicate with customers in the field
- Clean tools, equipment, materials and specified work areas as needed
- Follow specific work orders as given by skilled worker or foreman

Working Environment
Shop & warehouse environment as well as field environment. Exposure to noise from foot traffic, forklift, & pallets jacks. While performing the duties of this job, the emp is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mech parts & vibration.
In the field, the employee is exposed to a variety of extreme weather conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud and confined spaces and exposure to multiple hazards.
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects and occasionally lift or move items up to 50 lbs.; grasping & gripping; standing for long periods of time; stooping, crouching, & bending for long periods of time; walking. Other phys Requirements include sense of sight, sound, smell, touch, and the ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
