Smart Metering Jobs in Renewable Energy

Smart metering professionals install, configure, and operate the meters and advanced metering infrastructure that record consumption at half-hourly or quarter-hourly resolution, together with the head-end systems, communications networks, and meter data management platforms behind them. Without that data at that resolution, time-of-use tariffs, settlement of flexibility, and any serious matching of demand to variable wind and solar output are arithmetic that nobody can actually do.

Two markets, twelve years apart

Great Britain is close to finished. At the end of June 2026 there were 42 million smart and advanced meters operating, 72% of all meters, with 92% of the 40 million smart meters communicating in smart mode. Large suppliers still installed 1.1 million meters in that quarter alone, though 570,000 of those were replacements rather than new installations, which is the shape of a rollout entering its churn phase. Installer demand there will fall; demand for the people who fix the 8% that will not communicate, and for those who make the data usable, will not.

Germany is at the opposite end. Bundesnetzagentur figures for mid-2026 put 3.2 million intelligent metering systems against 54.1 million metering points, a penetration of 5.9%, and 26.1% among the mandatory installation cases. The regulator opened 434 supervisory proceedings against operators that missed the 20% interim target at the end of 2025, and 77 of those companies had installed nothing at all. Roughly 765,000 units went in during the first half of 2026. Germany is the largest hiring opportunity in European metering precisely because it is so far behind, and the work there is a rollout programme rather than a maintenance one.

The roles, and where they sit

Field engineering carries the volume: Dual Fuel Smart Meter Engineer, Metering Engineer for three-phase work, and Systemtechniker Messstellenbetrieb cover installation, exchange, certification, and fault work. Three-phase and commercial metering pays materially better than single-phase domestic work and takes longer to train.

Behind the field sit the system roles. Meter Systems Engineer, firmware and software quality engineering, communications and head-end integration, and increasingly the analytics layer: metering operations specialists, billing and contract operations analysts, and revenue assurance staff who find the meters that stopped reporting before the customer does. Commercial roles such as Business Lead Smart Energy for smart meters and dynamic tariffs sit closest to the product.

The meter is the source, not the destination. Building the pipelines and data models downstream is data engineering. Turning the resulting signals into dispatchable load is demand response and flexibility and, aggregated, virtual power plants. Submetering for chargepoints and bidirectional vehicles belongs to smart charging and V2G. Securing devices that sit in millions of homes and answer to a head-end system is operational technology cybersecurity, and it is the fastest-growing premium in the field.

Who is hiring

Landis+Gyr posts far more metering roles than anyone else, spanning meter hardware, firmware quality, and head-end software, and its hiring centres in Noida and Alpharetta, Georgia account for much of the volume. German utilities and IT providers cover the rollout side: GISA, EWR in Remscheid, and operators recruiting in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Leipzig.

Retail suppliers hire where the meter meets the tariff. Octopus Energy and Rabot Energy build dynamic-tariff products on half-hourly data, Ecotricity in Stroud and Plug Me In hire engineers and operations staff, and KUGU works the submetering and heating-cost analytics layer on top.

The candidates in shortest supply are not meter fitters. They are people who can read a communications failure in a mesh network and explain what it did to a settlement run.
