What They Do

Sonnen GmbH is a leading company in the field of intelligent lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) home storage systems that are safe and sustainable. The products are designed to store excess energy from photovoltaic systems and promote energy independence for users. Key products include the modular sonnenBatterie, available in various sizes, as well as solutions like sonnenCommunity, which allows users to share renewable energy (source: sonnengroup.com). Sonnen has evolved from a battery manufacturer to an energy provider and operates one of the largest virtual power plants in the world, based on home storage systems.

Projects & Track Record

Notable projects by Sonnen include the sonnenCommunity, which connected over 50,000 households by 2020, enabling them to share renewable energy in a decentralized manner. By 2020, over 90,000 sonnenBatterien had been installed worldwide, allowing households to act as "small power plants" (source: sonnengroup.com). The production facilities in San Jose, California, and Atlanta, Georgia, support the U.S. markets and research and development. Sonnen has also partnered with companies like ES Solar and Haas Home Technologies to offer integrated solar battery solutions.

Recent Developments

In the past two years, there have been no major announcements or acquisitions; however, the acquisition by Shell in 2019 was confirmed in July 2023 (source: kfw.de). Sonnen continues to have over 90,000 installations and offers a standard 10-year warranty on its products. The ten-year anniversary celebration in 2020 highlighted the company's achievements, including connecting over 50,000 households and reaching a workforce of 700.

Working There

Sonnen offers a variety of roles in engineering, manufacturing, sales, and energy supply. The workforce has grown from 200 to over 700, indicating increasing demand in technical and expansion-oriented departments (source: wikipedia.org). The company culture fosters innovation and a decentralized team that operates in the rural environment of Bavaria while also acting globally. The headquarters is located in Wildpoldsried, where the core production of 1,000 units per month takes place.

Job Description

At sonnen, we're driven by a clear goal: creating a future powered by clean, affordable energy for everyone. That's why we make our customers independent - not only from fossil fuels, but also from rising electricity costs.

The key to this independence is our intelligent, all-in-one energy system. It combines solar panels, battery storage, energy tariffs, and wallboxes - all developed and manufactured in Germany.

As the first and only provider in Germany, we also connect thousands of home batteries into one shared network: the sonnenVPP, our industry-leading virtual power plant.

In short: every day, we're working to shape the energy future. And we'd be thrilled to have you join us!

In this role, you will work closely with business stakeholders, software engineering teams, SAP integration experts, and data engineering teams to design and deliver trusted datasets and analytical solutions that support operational excellence, decision-making, and innovation across the company. We're looking for someone who enjoys understanding complex business processes, translating them into meaningful data products, and helping shape the future of our analytics landscape. If you are curious, collaborative, and passionate about turning data into business value, we'd love to hear from you.

What you will do to help drive the energy transition

  • Partner with business stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand analytical needs, identify opportunities, and define requirements for data products and analytical solutions.
  • Translate business requirements into scalable data models, curated datasets, and actionable insights that enable data-driven decision-making.
  • Design, develop, and maintain data products by integrating data from operational systems, backend services, SAP solutions, and other internal and external data sources.
  • Collaborate with software engineering and data engineering teams to ensure reliable integration of data into sonnen's analytics platform and data ecosystem.
  • Contribute to the evolution of our data architecture, data governance, and analytics strategy, helping establish sustainable and scalable data products.
  • Develop and maintain data transformation logic, analytical datasets, and semantic models that support reporting, analytics, and advanced use cases.
  • Implement data quality controls, monitoring mechanisms, and validation processes to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and trustworthiness.
  • Drive continuous improvement of our data products and analytics capabilities by identifying gaps, opportunities, and emerging technologies.
  • Ensure high standards for documentation, maintainability, and software engineering practices using version control and collaborative development workflows.

What you will need on that journey

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, Data Analytics, Data Architecture, or a similar role.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with both business and technical stakeholders and translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Experience designing and implementing data models, curated datasets, and analytics-ready data structures.
  • Understanding of modern data architecture concepts, data warehousing, and lakehouse platforms (e.g., AWS Redshift, Databricks).
  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data from multiple operational systems and APIs.
  • Strong knowledge of Python, SQL, REST APIs, and data transformation frameworks.
  • Familiarity with data quality management, governance principles, and monitoring practices.
  • Ability to contribute to strategic discussions around data architecture, data products, and analytics enablement.
  • Experience in cloud-based analytics environments is highly desirable.
  • Fluency in English; German is a plus.
