About the role

The Senior Payroll Specialist will play a key part in leading and guiding a team of Payroll Specialists in day-to-day execution and delivery of all payroll operational activities. The successful candidate will possess the ability to facilitate high quality payroll outcomes, while ensuring payroll compliance with relevant legislation, including the Fair Work Act, superannuation, PAYG, and other statutory obligations. The individual will also be adept in mentoring team members, enhancing their payroll skills and knowledge and supporting their ongoing professional development.

What You'll Be Doing

Leadership

  • Leveraging the AGL Leadership Capability Framework, set high standards, obtain feedback, and understand strengths & development opportunities to develop self and drive performance
  • Share knowledge and work collaboratively, including across different payroll areas, to deliver on core objectives and achievements as a Payroll team
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive relationships with team members, employees, and external partners
  • Ability to mentor and coach team members to enhance their payroll skills and knowledge, not limited to providing initial training and support to payroll staff, ensuring ongoing professional development and the effective resolution of complex payroll issues.

Operational Execution

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures, Work Instructions and Checklists to ensure that processes applied are consistent, predictable and productive
  • Ensure accurate and timely payment of all entitlements provided through Payroll by reviewing payroll results to confirm payroll details, and statutory and taxation obligations are correct
  • Serve as an escalation point for operational queries by offering guidance and knowledge for issue resolution and query management, ensuring that payroll critical issues are escalated appropriately.

Customer Service

  • For assigned emails provide effective and reliable customer service to employees and business partners (especially P&C, HSE and Finance) within agreed timeframes
  • Solve operational queries by analysing pay results for issue resolution and query management, ensuring that payroll critical issues are escalated as appropriate.

Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify, recommend and implement continuous improvement initiatives across payroll and exception time management in partnership with both internal and external stakeholders and the broader Payroll team
  • Monitor payroll compliance with relevant legislation, including the Fair Work Act, superannuation, PAYG, and other statutory obligations.
  • Assist with testing for resolution of operational system issues and implementation of payroll changes for new business or statutory requirements
  • Assist with internal and external payroll audits
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate process documentation
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholder teams to ensure compliance and improve system efficiency

What You'll Bring

  • Minimum of 5 years of payroll experience, including leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Experience managing offshore/outsourced service providers.
  • Proven experience in managing end-to-end payroll for multiple awards and contracts.
  • Proficiency in using Time & Attendance and ERP HRIS systems.
  • Strong ability to identify areas for process improvement and implement effective solutions.
  • Proven capability in leading and developing enterprise-wide operational teams in complex and diverse businesses across varied stakeholder groups and multiple locations in high-change environments.
  • Maintaining in-depth knowledge of payroll-related laws and regulations, including tax laws, labour laws, and superannuation requirements through continued professional development and learning opportunities.
  • Good understanding of end-to-end payroll processes and procedures, including from new starter to termination, year-end reconciliations and financial postings.
  • Effective communication at all levels, both written and verbal, including documentation of payroll procedures.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities, together with a solution-focused outlook.
  • Good skill level with Microsoft Excel with a high level of numeracy and detail-orientated.
