ENERCON

Company Overview

ENERCON GmbH

Aurich, Germany

1984

Approximately 3,000 employees worldwide (source: linkedin.com). The company does not disclose public revenue figures for 2023 or later.

What They Do

ENERCON focuses exclusively on onshore wind turbine technology and is known for its innovative development of gearless direct drive systems that reduce maintenance efforts and increase reliability. These systems utilize ring-shaped synchronous machines, either with permanent magnets (PMG) for the EP5 platform models or electrically excited generators for the EP3 models. The rotor blades are optimized to provide high energy yield, noise reduction, and minimized stress (source: enercon.de). The current product portfolio includes two platforms: the EP5 for medium to low wind sites with models like the E-175 EP5 with 6-7 MW rated power and a rotor diameter of 175 m, as well as the EP3 for medium wind conditions, offering versatile configurations up to several MW. These support hybrid integrations, including battery storage and grid connections (source: enercon.de).

Projects & Track Record

Notable completed projects include the Feldheim regional regulation power plant in Brandenburg, Germany, inaugurated in 2015, which features integrated wind and storage systems for grid regulation. Another example is the E-115/3 MW prototype in Lower Saxony, introduced in 2013 and transitioned to series production in 2014. Additionally, nearshore installations of the E-112 were realized in Wybelsumer Polder and on the Ems River in 2004 (source: jidipi.com). Current major projects include the Janneby wind farm in Germany, where ENERCON recently commissioned the first E-175 EP5 E2 turbine, feeding electricity into the grid.

Recent Developments

In the past two years, ENERCON has announced a strategic realignment to focus on turbine delivery, modular services, and integrated hybrid solutions such as wind + storage for grid-connected systems. CEO Udo Bauer emphasized the importance of partnerships for power generation, storage, and grid integration (source: windtech-international.com). Key contracts include the commissioning of the Janneby wind farm in Germany, while there are no public records of acquisitions or mergers for the years 2023-2025.

Working There

ENERCON offers positions in various fields such as development, production, sales, service, engineering, research and development, and project management. Hiring primarily takes place at the headquarters in Aurich, Germany, and at production sites in Magdeburg, Emden, Portugal, Brazil, Sweden, and Turkey (source: enercon.de). The corporate culture emphasizes innovation and responsibility for sustainable energy concepts, with regional employees managing projects supported by the expertise of the headquarters.
