What They Do
Teraloop Oy specializes in kinetic flywheel-based energy storage systems, which are designed to support the integration of renewable energy sources. Their technology utilizes high-speed rotating flywheels with active magnetic bearings (AMB) to mechanically store electrical energy, providing a viable alternative to traditional electrochemical batteries. This innovative approach is particularly beneficial for managing the intermittency associated with solar and wind energy applications (source: startupbootcamp.com.au). The company's flagship product, the PowerLoop system, is delivered in self-contained TEU units that integrate various components, including flywheels and power electronics, to offer a range of services such as grid energy exchange reduction and power factor correction (source: businessfinland.com). Teraloop targets a diverse market, including industrial consumers, independent power producers, and EV ultra-fast charging stations, positioning itself as a leader in the energy storage sector (source: spindrive.fi).
Projects & Track Record
As a relatively early-stage company, Teraloop has not yet completed commercial projects with specific names or capacities publicly documented. However, they are actively developing the P250 kinetic energy storage system, which is aimed at industrial applications such as data centers and microgrids. This system features a hubless flywheel design that is optimized for efficiency and maintenance-free operation (source: spindrive.fi). Teraloop has established key partnerships, notably with SpinDrive for AMB engineering, and is seeking additional sales partners with experience in the B2B energy sector to enhance their market presence (source: businessfinland.com). Their geographic focus is primarily on Finland, with aspirations for expansion across Europe, although no international projects have been reported as of yet (source: startupbootcamp.com.au).
Recent Developments
In recent months, Teraloop has made significant strides in its technology development. On August 31, 2023, the company announced the selection of SpinDrive's active magnetic bearings for its flywheels, which is expected to enhance their product offerings in the EV charging sector (source: spindrive.fi). Earlier funding achievements include a €2.4 million grant from the EU’s Horizon 2020 SME Instrument, aimed at advancing their commercial roadmap for flywheel technology (source: siliconcanals.com). Additionally, Teraloop has earned the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label, recognizing their scalable flywheel storage solutions, although the specific date of this achievement remains unspecified (source: solarimpulse.com).
Working There
Teraloop offers a dynamic work environment with roles primarily focused on engineering, development, and operations. The team is diverse, comprising members from 11 different countries, which enriches the company culture and fosters innovation (source: startupbootcamp.com.au). The company is currently looking to hire sales professionals with experience in the B2B energy sector, as well as after-sales service partners for maintenance support (source: businessfinland.com). Teraloop's culture emphasizes autonomy, integrity, and a commitment to corporate social responsibility, aiming to create a meaningful impact in the energy sector (source: teraloop.org).
