What They Do

PurposeEnergy LLC specializes in industrial waste-to-biogas solutions, focusing primarily on anaerobic digestion technology that converts organic waste streams from food and beverage producers into valuable resources such as biogas, reusable water, and nutrient-rich soil amendments (source: purposeenergy.com). Their biogas outputs are versatile, serving industrial heat needs, renewable electricity generation, or refinement into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), tailored to customer and site-specific requirements (source: purposeenergy.com). The company operates as a vertically integrated developer and operator, not only designing and building anaerobic digestion facilities but also owning and managing them, which distinguishes it from pure engineering vendors (source: purposeenergy.com). Their core market includes industrial food and beverage manufacturers with process wastewater and organic residuals requiring sustainable waste treatment and resource recovery solutions (source: purposeenergy.com). Over the past 15 years, PurposeEnergy has developed, owned, and operated multiple projects that convert waste into renewable energy, emphasizing sustainability and circular economy principles (source: purposeenergy.com).

Projects & Track Record

PurposeEnergy’s project portfolio includes multiple anaerobic digestion facilities developed and operated over the last 15 years, focusing on converting industrial organic waste into biogas and other valuable outputs (source: purposeenergy.com). A flagship project is the St. Albans, Vermont renewable energy facility, which opened in May 2025 as a state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion plant developed in partnership with Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream (source: purposeenergy.com). This facility represents a significant milestone in PurposeEnergy’s waste-to-energy platform, showcasing their ability to deliver advanced renewable energy solutions tailored to large-scale food and beverage industry clients (source: purposeenergy.com). While detailed capacity and project-by-project data are not publicly listed, the company’s long-term operational experience underlines its expertise in industrial wastewater treatment and biogas production (source: purposeenergy.com).

Recent Developments

In April 2023, Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners announced its acquisition of PurposeEnergy, positioning the company as a key US-based renewable fuels and biogas specialist focused on sustainable waste solutions for the food and beverage sector (source: purposeenergy.com). Following this acquisition, PurposeEnergy marked a major expansion milestone with the grand opening of its St. Albans anaerobic digestion facility in May 2025, developed in partnership with Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, highlighting its growing footprint in renewable energy infrastructure (source: purposeenergy.com). The company continues to maintain active corporate and media engagement into 2026, updating its business descriptions and facility information to reflect ongoing developments (source: purposeenergy.com).

Working There

PurposeEnergy offers career opportunities primarily in project delivery, business development, and industrial process roles, reflecting its multidisciplinary operational focus (source: indeed.com). Current job postings include Project Manager positions responsible for overseeing design-build construction teams, managing detailed design, budgeting, scheduling, contract and design management, equipment procurement, and construction oversight for new anaerobic digester projects based at the Salem headquarters with 30–50% travel requirements (source: indeed.com). Business Development Associate roles are also actively recruited, indicating a focus on expanding client relationships and market presence (source: indeed.com). The company’s work environment spans engineering, project management, operations, and customer-facing implementation, with expertise areas including industrial wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion, water reclaim, nutrient recovery, and regulatory compliance (source: linkedin.com).

We are hiring a Project Developer to lead all aspects of site development and manage the design-development process for PurposeEnergy anaerobic digester plants. During a critical ~12-month window, the Project Developer serves as the primary client-facing manager as a project moves from sales into development and execution. Success requires leadership on two fronts: with the client, running project development meetings and serving as the primary point of contact; and internally, keeping the PurposeEnergy team on milestones, budgets, and schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Locating and screening properties for digester plants, determining availability, reviewing feasibility with engineering colleagues, and negotiating pricing
  • Leading entitlement and site permitting processes including zoning, variances, site development permits, stormwater, and traffic/access permits and curb cuts
  • Securing environmental permits including wastewater, air quality/air burn, plant installation (where required), FERC, and others as necessary
  • Identifying and managing attorneys through Letters of Interest, Purchase and Sale, title due diligence, and closing
  • Identifying and contracting site due diligence including traffic, geotechnical analysis, utility availability, Phase 1, natural resources and endangered species, topographical and ALTA surveys, and other standard processes
  • Creating and managing schedules and budgets for design, development, and permitting through the start of construction
  • Managing utility connections ensuring adequate service, cost clarity, and schedule certainty - including electric interconnection and co-generation (on-site generation plus offtake of electricity and/or renewable attributes) and gas connection with biogas clean-up and pressurization skids (plus offtake of biogas and/or attributes)
  • Coordinating with PurposeEnergy's sales, finance, design, and construction teams and serving as client-facing project lead - running client meetings and ensuring follow-through on outstanding tasks
  • Preparing internal project funding approval documents, coordinating with other functions to support completion.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrable history of successful real estate closings, entitlements, permits received, interconnection agreements signed, and/or comparable accomplishments in real estate and energy.
