Job description
The Operations Engineer provides engineering support across the operating fleet, with a focus on resolving key technical issues, improving plant reliability, and optimizing performance. This role serves as a plant generalist-bridging field execution, engineering analysis, and vendor engagement across the full plant, from the PV array to the point of interconnection. Working alongside the Power Conversion and Substation Engineers, the position drives resolution of both systemic and site-specific issues and provides operational insight that informs the design, equipment selection, and turnover of new projects.
Main Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary engineering resource for the Asset Operations team, providing troubleshooting support and coordinating corrective action implementation across the plant.
- Drive the resolution of key technical issues across the fleet, including serial defects, major equipment failures, and sustained underperformance.
- Translate field observations, inspection results, and performance data into clear problem statements and actionable solutions.
- Support O&M teams with structured troubleshooting and escalation.
- Own technical issues related to the PV array and DC balance of plant, including modules, trackers, DC collection, and grounding systems.
- Support technical issues on the AC balance of plant, from the padmount transformers to the point of interconnection, including MV collection systems.
- Support performance optimization for operating projects with recurring performance issues and for new projects with latent construction issues.
- Lead the identification and implementation of reliability best practices, including PM optimization, failure and root cause analyses, spare parts strategies, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead the review of engineering-related PM activities (such as thermal imaging and transformer DGA testing) to identify and correct deficiencies.
- Serve as a technical interface with OEMs, EPCs, contractors, and service providers, supporting issue escalation, warranty claims, and oversight of vendor performance.
- Support the engineering-related turnover of new projects from construction to operations, including commissioning review and resolution of technical gaps.
- Provide operational insight to Engineering and Delivery teams through design reviews and new equipment and vendor evaluations.
- Identify and communicate design or operational deficiencies.
- Develop processes, procedures, and tools that help the team manage technical issues efficiently, and support the training and mentoring of team members.
- Collaborate closely with Asset Management, O&M, Performance Engineering, ROC, Compliance, Engineering, and Delivery teams to improve fleet performance.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering strongly preferred)
Experience
- Operations Engineer: 0-5 years of relevant experience. Senior Operations Engineer: 6+ years of relevant experience.
- Utility-scale solar operations experience required for Senior Operations Engineer and preferred for Operations Engineer.
- Field experience troubleshooting utility-scale solar plant equipment, such as PV array and DC systems, inverters, and MV equipment.
- Experience working with OEMs, EPCs, contractors, and cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues.
- Experience with project turnover, commissioning, or design review is a plus.
Skills
- Broad understanding of utility-scale PV plant systems, including modules, trackers, DC collection, inverters, MV collection, and substations.
- Familiarity with electrical testing and inspection methods, such as insulation resistance, VLF, transformer electrical testing, thermography, and transformer DGA.
- Ability to read and review electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, and equipment specifications.
- Working knowledge of plant SCADA, communications networks, and monitoring systems sufficient to troubleshoot data and communication issues.
- Working knowledge of applicable NEC, NESC, IEEE, IEC, and NETA requirements.
- Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
- Experience with root cause analysis and reliability practices.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong communication skills and ability to influence outcomes across teams.
What We're Looking For
- A field-proven engineer and plant generalist who is comfortable across the entire PV plant.
- Someone who can connect on-site issues to broader system and fleet impacts.
- Organized and proactive; comfortable managing multiple priorities.
- Comfortable owning technical problems and driving them to resolution.

What They Do
Silicon Ranch focuses primarily on utility-scale solar energy development, ownership, and operation, integrated with battery storage and carbon solutions. The company has pioneered solar energy in the Southeast US, deploying US-made First Solar panels as early as 2015 and emphasizing long-term ownership of every project since its inception (source: siliconranch.com). Its core services encompass full-cycle project development from planning to construction and operations, featuring the proprietary Regenerative Energy platform that integrates agrivoltaics—combining solar generation with regenerative agriculture practices. This innovative approach was first implemented in 2019 at the 121-acre Providence Solar Farm in Tennessee, where 500 sheep were used to restore soil health through adaptive multi-paddock grazing (source: siliconranch.com). Target markets include utilities, corporations, and communities, allowing Silicon Ranch to serve as an independent power producer that generates tax revenues and creates jobs without requiring local capital investment.
Projects & Track Record
Among notable completed projects, Silicon Ranch delivered the 9.6 MW Chattanooga Volkswagen farm in Tennessee in 2012, marking the first utility-scale solar project in the state’s history. Other significant projects include the 39 MW Social Circle in Georgia (2013), 3 MW Okolona in Mississippi (2014), 17 MW Aerojet Rocketdyne in Arkansas (2015), and 20 MW Cumberland in Alabama (2018). By 2023, the company had achieved over 2.5 GW across 160+ projects, with a total portfolio exceeding 7 GW by 2025, spanning 15 states with coast-to-coast reach (source: siliconranch.com). Ongoing efforts include the Houston Solar Project, which unveiled a 26,000 sq. ft. lambing barn in 2024 to enhance national sheep flock genetics and host the first lambing season, alongside the CattleTracker™ research program integrating cattle grazing with solar (source: siliconranch.com). Key clients encompass major corporations and utilities, including Volkswagen, Aerojet Rocketdyne, and Meta, with partnerships aimed at carbon offsets through initiatives like Clearloop.
Recent Developments
In the last two years, Silicon Ranch has secured recognition as Solar Power World’s #1 Top Solar Developer in both 2023 and 2024, marking its fifth consecutive year at the top in Georgia. The company unveiled the Houston Solar lambing barn in 2024 and hosted its first CattleTracker™ DOE workshop the same year. Additionally, Silicon Ranch flipped the switch on a DENSO solar facility with TVA in Maryville, Tennessee, on August 29, 2025, and supported Meta’s massive AI operations project in September 2025 (source: siliconranch.com). Earlier milestones included acquiring Clearloop in 2021, crossing the 3 GW portfolio threshold, and launching agrivoltaics technician training programs, which have been instrumental in fostering local employment and community engagement.
Working There
Silicon Ranch employs over 300 people as of May 2025, with roles spanning development, project delivery, construction, operations, and land management. The company prioritizes local and veteran hiring, particularly in construction roles that scale with project size, and engages actively with local chambers of commerce for bids (source: siliconranch.com). Headquarters functions are based in Nashville, where strategic roles are filled, while field facilities across 15 states support construction and operations. The company culture emphasizes pioneering legacy, community integration, and holistic land stewardship, with a strong focus on local hiring and regenerative training programs that employ individuals from diverse backgrounds (source: siliconranch.com). Specific benefits are not detailed in public sources, but roles offer good-paying construction careers transitioning to long-term solar operations and land management.
