Intern Software & AI Engineering (80-100%) - 1667

Participate in the power supply in Switzerland

Since May 2025, Swissgrid's Balancing Energy Autopilot has been live, autonomously securing the stability of the Swiss power grid through high-performance, cost-efficient energy procurement. As the first European transmission system operator to run such a system, we've moved past the proof-of-concept phase - we are now in the business of continuous high-performance optimization.

Your time is split equally between hands-on product engineering and building the AI harness to elevate both our delivery speed and code quality.

1. Optimization of the Autopilot Performance (50%)

  • You work on the heart of Swissgrid: Machine Learning models and optimization problems that power our autopilot. Your task isn't just maintaining but pushing the boundaries of what's possible in live operation.

  • Your work has massive impact: we move fast, iterate quickly within short cycles, and deploy features that have a million-euro impact on the Swiss energy system.

  • You blend Data Science, ML, and Software Engineering to ensure the autopilot remains efficient and reliable.

2. Agentic AI & Next-Gen Engineering (50%)

  • Evolving the Software Lifecycle: Build and improve our closed-loop agentic architectures that take engineering challenges from high-level specifications to verified solutions.

  • Bridging Upstream & Downstream: Drive implementations that sharpen requirements upfront, paired with early prototypes of self-healing loops that detect and resolve operational friction across delivery pipelines.

This is how you make the difference

We are seeking a "Builder" who is creative enough to experiment and disciplined enough to deliver production-grade results.

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, AI, or a related field.

  • Tech Skills: Strong proficiency in Python and Software Engineering is a must. A solid foundation in Machine Learning is an advantage.

  • Mindset: You love the speed of "vibe coding" and rapid prototyping, but you understand that in critical infrastructure, the final details must be rock solid.

  • AI Passion: You are an AI enthusiast who keeps up with the latest trends and is eager to share that knowledge to enable others.

  • Impact-Driven: You want to see your work directly affecting the stability of a whole country's power supply.

Above all, we value curiosity and a growth mindset. If you're ready to tackle complex challenges in an interdisciplinary and fun environment, we want to hear from you!

What we offer

  • A comprehensive look behind the scenes of the electricity industry and an understanding of its challenges, as well as in-depth insights into the development of the grid of the future

  • Varied and exciting tasks within a company unique to Switzerland. Flexible working hours as part of a motivated team

  • 25-30 days of holiday, as well as company holiday between Christmas and New Year

  • A state-of-the-art work environment in the immediate vicinity of Aarau railway station

About Swissgrid

Company overview

Swissgrid AG, national transmission system operator of Switzerland

Aarau, Switzerland

2006

Approximately 900 employees (source: swissgrid.ch). Net revenue of CHF 1,825.1 million in 2024 (source: report.swissgrid.ch).

What they do

Swissgrid is the national transmission system operator of Switzerland and operates the country’s extra-high voltage electricity transmission grid. The company is not responsible for electricity generation or the development of conventional renewable energies but ensures the reliable transport of electricity between generation regions, international interconnectors and consumption centres. Swissgrid keeps the system balanced in real time, manages cross-border electricity flows and plans and builds the necessary infrastructure for power transmission (source: swissgrid.ch). Core tasks include system operation, procurement and activation of balancing energy, grid planning, market and settlement services, as well as international coordination with European transmission system operators (source: swissgrid.ch). Swissgrid uses state-of-the-art digital technologies, automation and data platforms to monitor the grid and efficiently manage complex power flows (source: swissgrid.ch). Customers include power producers, distribution system operators, large consumers, traders and European market platforms, while end consumers are indirectly connected to Swissgrid via local distribution companies (source: swissgrid.ch).

Projects and track record

Swissgrid is pursuing a long-term infrastructure programme called Strategic Grid 2040, which includes 31 major grid projects up to 2040 and foresees investments of around CHF 5.5 billion. This programme involves reinforcing approximately 400 kilometres of existing lines, constructing around 790 kilometres of new lines and dismantling about 790 kilometres of old lines (source: swissgrid.ch). A standout project is the 220 kV Gotthard cable, which replaces a roughly 23-kilometre overhead line over the Gotthard Pass with an underground cable in the Gotthard road tunnel. This project is realised in cooperation with the Federal Roads Office and has an estimated investment of over CHF 140 million (source: swissgrid.ch). The Bickigen–Mettlen project replaces an ageing 220 kV line between Bern and Lucerne with a new line, with construction planned between 2031 and 2034 (source: swissgrid.ch). Additionally, a new transformer was commissioned in 2025 at the Bonaduz substation in Graubünden to strengthen the transmission grid in this region (source: swissgrid.ch). Swissgrid operates around 6,700 kilometres of lines and about 147 substations, including 41 international interconnectors, highlighting the importance of international coordination for European electricity flows (source: swissgrid.ch).

Current developments

In 2024, Swissgrid achieved net revenue of CHF 1.825 billion, an increase of CHF 605.9 million compared to 2023. This rise reflects the tariff-based and pass-through nature of the revenues, not growth in competitive business (source: report.swissgrid.ch). In April 2025, Swissgrid published the Strategic Grid 2040 programme, defining long-term infrastructure needs and naming 31 projects with an investment volume of around CHF 5.5 billion (source: swissgrid.ch). In March 2025, the Gotthard cable project received building approval, a key milestone for constructing the 220 kV tunnel cable system (source: swissgrid.ch). Also in March 2025, Swissgrid submitted the application for the sectoral planning procedure for the long-term renewal of the Bickigen–Mettlen line (source: swissgrid.ch). Innovation work has been expanded, including the PV4Balancing pilot project, which investigates how photovoltaic systems can provide flexibility for the balancing energy market (source: swissgrid.ch). In 2025, Swissgrid invested CHF 356.6 million, of which CHF 281.2 million was in grid expansion and CHF 15.3 million in maintenance, with a net profit of CHF 91.7 million (source: swissgrid.ch).

Working at Swissgrid

Swissgrid offers a wide range of roles in electrical engineering, grid operation, grid planning, civil engineering, project management, asset management, maintenance, procurement, legal, regulation, finance, communications, human resources, IT, cybersecurity, data analysis and electricity market operations. Technical roles especially include grid control, protection and automation, high voltage technology, grid studies, balancing energy, energy economics and cross-border coordination (source: swissgrid.ch). Operational and technical activities are spread across locations in Aarau, Prilly, Castione and Ostermundigen, with some positions requiring regular travel to substations and construction sites throughout Switzerland (source: swissgrid.ch). The working environment is characterised by a public infrastructure mandate emphasising safety, reliability, regulatory compliance and long-term planning. Grid control roles may involve shift and on-call duties (source: swissgrid.ch). Swissgrid recruits across all language regions of Switzerland and operates in a multilingual, internationally connected environment, with German, French, Italian and English relevant depending on location and role (source: swissgrid.ch). The company offers professional development, flexible working models, pension and insurance benefits, as well as modern work infrastructure, with specific benefits varying by position (source: swissgrid.ch).
