Battery Management Systems Jobs in Renewable Energy

A battery management system (BMS) is the electronics and firmware that monitor every cell in a battery, balance charge between cells, estimate state of charge and health, and shut the system down before a fault becomes a fire. Demand for that work follows the storage build-out. SolarPower Europe reports that the EU installed a record 27.1 GWh of batteries in 2025, 45% more than in 2024, bringing its fleet to 77.3 GWh.

What BMS work involves

The BMS sits in a layered control stack. Inside each module, slave boards read cell voltages and temperatures; a master controller per rack or container runs the estimation and protection logic; above it, the energy management system decides when the site charges and discharges, and the power conversion system turns that into current. BMS engineers work across the lower layers: circuit design for cell monitoring, embedded C for the control firmware, algorithms such as Kalman filters for state-of-charge estimation, and communication over CAN and Modbus. The work overlaps with power electronics at the hardware level and with electrochemistry when it comes to modelling how cells age.

Stationary storage adds its own demands. Grid-scale sites now pack several megawatt-hours into a single container, most of it lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, whose flat voltage curve makes state-of-charge estimation harder than with the nickel-based cells common in cars. Because a BMS decides whether a battery can safely deliver the service it was contracted for, its data also feeds warranty claims, degradation forecasts, and the revenue models of the owner.

Who is hiring

Most listings tagged with BMS come from companies that build or run battery energy storage systems. Integrators such as Fluence and Eos Energy Enterprises, whose zinc-based batteries need their own management logic, hire firmware, controls, and field service engineers. German start-ups Voltfang, in Aachen, and TRICERA energy, in Dresden, develop their own storage systems and BMS for commercial and industrial customers, while Canada's Moment Energy builds storage from second-life EV batteries, where estimating the health of used cells is the core of the product. Verkor, which makes cells at its gigafactory near Dunkirk, is also among the most active hirers.

Owners and operators form the other half. Zenobē in London, Terra-gen, and SOLV Energy hire control room operators, BESS technicians, electricians, and data scientists who read BMS data every day, spotting cell imbalance, thermal drift, and capacity fade across a fleet.

Skills in demand

The build-out is far from over: SolarPower Europe estimates the EU needs about 750 GWh of batteries by 2030, roughly ten times today's fleet. The engineers who stand out combine embedded firmware with an understanding of battery technology and degradation, and can show that a state-of-health estimate holds up against real field data. On the operations side, technicians who can diagnose a BMS alarm, not only reset it, are the ones who move into senior field and control room roles.
