Biofuels jobs in renewable energy

Biofuels Jobs in Renewable Energy

Biofuels professionals produce, trade, and certify liquid fuels from biomass: ethanol, biodiesel, hydrotreated renewable diesel (HVO), and the bio-based share of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), in biorefineries, fuel logistics, and the compliance systems that decide what counts as renewable.

The market is larger and more political than its profile suggests. The IEA's Renewables 2025 transport chapter raised its 2030 biofuel demand forecast by 50% and expects most of the growth outside Europe: Brazil accounts for 40% of it, Indonesia 20%, India 15%, and Europe only 10%. Demand follows blending mandates, so careers in the field follow policy more closely than in almost any other part of bioenergy.

Road fuels and the feedstock squeeze

Road transport still takes most of the volume. Brazil's sugarcane ethanol industry, with a car fleet largely able to run on high ethanol blends, is the world's clearest example of a biofuel economy at scale, while Indonesia and Malaysia have pushed palm-based biodiesel blends up steadily. In Europe the growth is in HVO, a drop-in diesel made by hydrotreating waste oils and fats that engines can burn without modification.

That shift created the sector's central constraint. The IEA notes that vegetable, waste, and residue fats, oils, and greases are already in particularly high demand for biodiesel, renewable diesel, and biojet production. Used cooking oil now moves across continents, and proving where a tonne of it came from has become a profession in its own right. Certification schemes such as ISCC, auditors, and traders who manage sustainability documentation hire steadily, and roles in carbon accounting and life cycle assessment overlap heavily with biofuel compliance.

Aviation: where not all SAF is biofuel

SAF is the fastest-growing segment. The IEA expects consumption to rise from 1 billion litres in 2024 to 9 billion litres in 2030, still only 2% of aviation fuel demand. Almost all of it will be bio-based, mostly HEFA fuel made from the same waste lipids as HVO; e-kerosene, synthesised from hydrogen and captured carbon, is forecast at just 5% of SAF output by then. The EU's ReFuelEU Aviation regulation required 2% SAF at EU airports from 2025 and adds a separate 1.2% synthetic fuel quota in 2030, so producers and airlines now hire for both pathways, and job seekers should read which one a "SAF" posting actually means.

Who is hiring

Refiners and producers lead: Neste, which describes itself as the world's leading producer of renewable diesel and SAF, and EcoCeres, which makes HVO and SAF from waste oils in Asia. Trading and environmental-commodity firms such as Targray and STX Group hire traders, operators, and compliance analysts, often in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, where the ARA fuel hub (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp) handles much of Europe's biofuel blending. ISCC and the International Council on Clean Transportation hire auditors and policy researchers.

Some of the busiest hiring near this tag is actually for wood pellets, a solid fuel. Enviva's control room, chip mill, and pellet mill operator roles in the south-eastern United States belong to biomass energy rather than liquid fuels, though the plant skills transfer well.

On the technical side, biorefineries need chemical and process engineers who understand hydrotreating, fermentation, and catalyst management, plus operators who can run continuous plants. The premium goes to people who combine process knowledge with fluency in the rules, because a litre of biofuel is only worth its price once regulators accept its feedstock and its emissions calculation.
