Civil Engineering jobs in renewable energy

Civil Engineering Jobs in Renewable Energy

Civil engineers in renewable energy design and build the ground works that carry energy infrastructure: turbine foundations, access roads and crane pads, drainage, cable trenches, substation platforms, dams, and tunnels.

Civil works come first on every project and often decide whether it is built on time. The UK government's Onshore Wind Taskforce Strategy aims to take Great Britain from 14.8 GW of onshore wind to 27 to 29 GW by 2030, a build-out it says could support up to 45,000 direct and indirect jobs. Each of those new wind farms starts with kilometres of access track across upland terrain, concrete foundations for every turbine, and hardstandings strong enough for heavy lifting cranes, all designed and supervised by civil engineers.

What the work involves on renewable sites

The job changes with the technology. On a wind farm, civil engineers design gravity or piled foundations for turbines whose loads have grown with every generation, plan access routes that can take blade transporters around tight bends, and design drainage that keeps peat and hillsides stable. Foundation design sits close to geotechnical engineering, where ground investigation decides whether a design will work at all, and to structural engineering for the concrete and steel details.

Utility-scale solar looks simpler but covers far larger areas: earthworks and grading across hundreds of hectares, pile testing for mounting structures, internal roads, fencing, and stormwater systems that satisfy environmental permits. Substations and battery sites need foundations for transformers and containers, cable trenches, oil containment, and fire walls. Site engineers and civil superintendents then turn the drawings into work on the ground during construction and site management, checking levels, concrete pours, and compaction.

Hydropower and pumped storage

The largest civil jobs in the sector are underground. Snowy Hydro's Snowy 2.0 project in New South Wales links two existing reservoirs through 27 kilometres of tunnels to a 2,200 MW power station about 800 metres underground, with completion scheduled for the end of 2028. Projects of this kind hire tunnel engineers, dam safety engineers, and hydraulic engineers, disciplines that also run through the maintenance of older schemes. Titles such as Dam Safety Engineer and Hydraulic Engineer in our listings come from this side of hydropower, where owners must inspect and upgrade structures built decades ago.

Who is hiring

Engineering consultancies lead the listings: Ulteig in North America, AFRY, and Cundall hire civil engineers who work across several clients and technologies. Snowy Hydro recruits in Cooma for Snowy 2.0 and its existing scheme. Developers and utilities such as Enel, Iberdrola Renewables, and UKA Umweltgerechte Kraftanlagen hire civil engineers to manage contractors on their own projects, while grid and heat companies, including the Dutch distribution operator Enexis and Berlin's district heating utility BEW, need civil engineers for cable and pipe networks under city streets. Berlin, Montreal, Hamburg, Aberdeen, and Glasgow lead the locations.

Engineers from roads, rail, and general construction move into renewables easily, since the core skills of earthworks, concrete, and drainage are the same. What they need to add is familiarity with the equipment: turbine foundation loads, crane logistics, and the tolerances that electrical contractors expect when they arrive on site.
