Data Engineering Jobs in Renewable Energy
Data engineering is the design and running of the pipelines, storage, and integration layers that move raw data, from meter readings and turbine telemetry to market prices and weather forecasts, into platforms that analysts, traders, and control systems can trust. In energy the volume comes from devices that never stop reporting: at the end of June 2026 Great Britain alone had 42 million smart and advanced meters in homes and small businesses, 72% of all meters, and a smart meter records consumption every half hour.
What energy data engineers do
The daily work is ingestion and repair. SCADA feeds from wind and solar fleets arrive with gaps, frozen values, and duplicate timestamps; meter data arrives late and gets corrected weeks afterwards in settlement; weather and price feeds change format without warning. Data engineers build the pipelines that catch those problems, reconcile the data against asset registers, and publish clean, versioned tables to data science and analytics teams. Most adverts ask for SQL, Python, Spark or a similar framework, orchestration tools such as Airflow, and one of the big cloud platforms, with Azure and Databricks named most often.
What separates the energy version of the job is domain knowledge. An engineer who knows why curtailment (deliberately reducing output the grid cannot absorb) shows up as a flat line rather than a fault, or why a half-hourly settlement period must never be double-counted, builds pipelines that analysts do not have to second-guess. Latency matters too: battery optimisation and flexibility trading need data within seconds, not in tomorrow's batch.
Employers hiring data engineers
Utilities and grid companies make up the largest group. Vattenfall, Ørsted, EDP Renewables, and AGL Energy hire data engineers to consolidate generation, trading, and customer data on shared platforms. Network operators such as the Dutch distribution company Enexis and Southern California Edison need them to handle the data from smart metering and grid sensors, and the meter maker Landis+Gyr recruits data engineers as well.
Suppliers and software companies form the second group. OVO Energy and the German digital supplier Rabot Energy build their products on customer and market data, and Fluence Energy hires for the platforms that run battery fleets. The scale such firms reach shows in a vendor case study published by Databricks: Octopus Energy's Kraken platform, which serves 54 million customer accounts in 17 countries, grew from 15 data professionals to more than 700 employees working with its data. Berlin, London, and Hamburg lead the openings, followed by Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Melbourne.
Skills that command a premium
Titles run from data engineer to senior and staff data engineer, with analytics engineers and DevOps engineers for data platforms alongside. The best-paid profiles combine platform skills with energy knowledge: time-series databases, streaming with Kafka or similar tools, and an understanding of market settlement or asset telemetry. As utilities push machine learning into forecasting and predictive maintenance, the models are rarely the bottleneck; the reliability of the data feeding them is, and that is the work data engineers are hired to own.
