Electrical Installation Jobs in Renewable Energy

Electrical installation covers the hands-on trade work of pulling and terminating cable, connecting switchgear and inverters, fitting distribution boards, and testing the result to standard before a system is energised. In renewable energy it is the trade that turns a financed project into a generating asset, and it is where the sector's skills shortage bites hardest. The IRENA and ILO annual review counts at least 16.6 million renewable energy jobs worldwide, the largest single share of them in construction and installation rather than in engineering offices.

What changes when the trade moves into renewables

A qualified building electrician does not walk straight onto a solar farm. The most obvious difference is direct current: PV arrays run string voltages up to 1500 V DC, and a DC arc does not self-extinguish at a zero crossing the way an AC one does, which changes isolation practice, the choice of protective devices, and what counts as a safe working method. Earthing and bonding across a multi-hectare array raise questions that no domestic consumer unit ever poses.

Wind work makes different demands again. An electrician in a nacelle is working at height in a confined space, usually holding GWO basic safety training and often a high voltage switching authorisation for the 690 V converter and the transformer below it. Employers advertising in wind operations and maintenance treat the rope access and rescue side of the qualification set as non-negotiable, which is why an experienced industrial electrician still needs several weeks of certification before a first shift.

Battery sites have added a third pattern in the past three years. A storage technician commissioning balance-of-plant deals with DC busbars at container scale, auxiliary supplies, HVAC, and fire detection, and the role sits somewhere between the electrical trade and controls work.

Who is hiring and where

The vacancies on Rejobs cluster around three employer types. Specialist service companies supply the bulk of them: Deutsche Windtechnik, SPIE Wind, and Spark Power recruit continuously for turbine electronics technicians and field electricians. Contractors and installers such as Hypower and Hochwind hire for site-based crews, and utilities and manufacturers including Enel, Nordex, and 1KOMMA5° take on electricians alongside their own apprenticeship intakes.

The job titles reflect national licensing more than technology. British postings ask for a Solar PV Electrician or an electrical site supervisor, German ones for an Elektroniker für Windenergieanlagen or a Schaltschrankbau electrician, North American ones for a journeyman electrician or, in Ontario, a licensed 309A. Southern England is unusually well represented, with Ringwood, Chippenham, Maidstone, Lincoln, and Kent all recurring, alongside German sites and Houston and Miami in the United States.

The pipeline problem is the career opportunity

The training funnel is not keeping up. The Electrical Contractors' Association reports that the UK will need an additional 12,000 electricians by 2030 while electrical apprenticeship starts fell 5.5 per cent year on year, and that of more than 26,000 learners on government-funded electrical courses in 2024/25, fewer than one in five reached an apprenticeship or skilled employment within twelve months. The classroom route alone does not produce a working electrician, and employers know it.

For anyone already holding the core qualification, the fastest route to a premium is stacking specialisms that the sector cannot buy in volume: DC array work plus high voltage switching, or solar installation experience plus storage commissioning, or the growing overlap with EV charging installation where the same trade licence applies to a different load profile.
