Rooftop Solar Jobs in Renewable Energy

Rooftop solar is the design, sale, installation, and servicing of PV systems on homes and commercial buildings, from a four-kilowatt array on a terraced house to a megawatt on a warehouse roof. Its fortunes now differ sharply by country. The UK certification body MCS recorded 257,397 small-scale solar installations in 2025, a record and 32% more than in 2024, while across the EU the rooftop segment has been losing ground.

What makes rooftop work its own trade

Every roof is a different job. Before a panel goes up, a site assessor checks the rafters, the roof covering, shading, and the condition of the fuse board, and the design has to fit around chimneys, dormers, and fire access rules. Installers then work at height on tile, slate, metal, or flat membranes, often on buildings that were never meant to carry an extra load. That is why rooftop crews mix trades: listings on Rejobs ask for PV installers who are also roofers, carpenters, or electricians, and German firms advertise specifically for "Dachdecker Photovoltaik". The product has also grown beyond panels. Many residential jobs now include a home battery, and many companies sell PV together with heat pumps, EV chargers, and energy management software as one package. Installers who can handle the electrical side of all of that are the most useful people in the crew. Commercial rooftops are a different business again: larger arrays, structural surveys by engineers, grid applications, and landlords and tenants who must agree on who gets the power.

Who is hiring

In the United States, Venture Solar, Sunrun, Freedom Forever, Everlight Solar, and Trinity Solar hire installers, roof leads, and large numbers of sales staff, since residential solar is still sold largely through door-to-door and in-home appointments. Solar Landscape, based in Asbury Park, New Jersey, builds solar on commercial and warehouse roofs, much of it as community solar that serves nearby households. In the UK, Good Energy hires installers and surveyors across England, with Lincoln, Kent, and Chippenham among the top UK locations. In Germany, 1KOMMA5° and the franchise network enerix recruit both installers and people to run local installation businesses.

A cooler European market

The UK record contrasts with the wider EU picture. SolarPower Europe reports that rooftop's share of the EU solar workforce fell from 73% in 2022 to 59% in 2024, as household demand cooled after the 2022 energy crisis. Installers have followed the work to commercial rooftops and to adding batteries to homes that already have PV.

The long-term demand is still structural. England is expected to require solar on most new homes under its forthcoming building standards, and every system installed in the past decade will need inspection, inverter replacement, and eventually repowering. For installers, the durable skill is electrical competence combined with roof work, backed by certification such as MCS in the UK or NABCEP in the US.
