Engineering Management Jobs in Renewable Energy

Engineering management means leading engineers and owning technical delivery: running a discipline team or a whole engineering department, setting design standards, signing off designs as the technical authority, and deciding who works on what. It is not the same job as project management, although renewable energy listings mix the two constantly. A project manager answers for cost, schedule, and contract; an engineering manager answers for whether the thing works, is safe, and was designed by people who knew what they were doing.

Why the role is scarce

Shortages of experienced engineers push this role up the hiring agenda. More than half of the 700-plus energy firms, unions, and educators in the IEA's annual survey reported critical hiring bottlenecks, according to World Energy Employment 2025, and the shortfall is sharpest in applied technical roles, which make up over half of an energy workforce of 76 million. The UK government's Clean Energy Jobs Plan expects clean energy to need 50,000 science, engineering, and technology professionals by 2030, up from 23,000 in 2023, and lists engineering project managers and project engineers among the occupations whose demand will more than double. Every one of those new engineers needs someone to hire, train, and review them, and that someone is usually promoted from a senior engineering post.

Who is hiring

Fusion developers post more engineering management roles than anyone else. Helion Energy in Everett, Washington, and Commonwealth Fusion Systems in Devens, Massachusetts, lead the employer list by a wide margin, with Thea Energy also in the top ten. Nuclear fusion companies are building engineering organisations from scratch while designing machines with no precedent, so they need managers for mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, and test teams at once, often reporting into a systems engineering function that holds the whole design together.

The rest of the list covers established hardware and utilities. Turbine maker Nordex, solar module manufacturer First Solar, fuel cell maker Bloom Energy, and engine and storage specialist Wärtsilä hire engineering managers for product development and manufacturing engineering. Iberdrola, SSE Renewables, and Australian grid company TransGrid recruit heads of engineering and lead engineers for their generation and network portfolios, where the job is less about invention and more about standards, design reviews, and owner's engineering on contractors' work.

Berlin and Hamburg are the largest European locations, followed by Glasgow, Madrid, Aberdeen, and London. In the United States, the fusion clusters around Seattle and Boston dominate.

What employers look for

Titles vary widely. Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering, Lead Engineer, and Technical Project Manager can describe the same responsibility, and Senior Engineer posts at smaller companies often carry team leadership that the title does not mention.

Most engineering managers in the sector are promoted from within a discipline, so the first filter is credibility as an engineer: a mechanical, electrical, or process background, chartered or professional engineer status in the UK, Ireland, and North America, and a record of designs that were built. What separates candidates is what they add on top: hiring and developing a team, running design reviews that catch problems before manufacturing does, and managing interfaces with suppliers and certification bodies. Engineers from aerospace, automotive, and oil and gas bring the most transferable experience, particularly of product development gates and safety cases.
