Field Service jobs in renewable energy

Field Service Jobs in Renewable Energy

Field service is technical work carried out at the customer's site: installing and commissioning equipment, diagnosing faults, and repairing or replacing components, usually on behalf of the company that made or sold the system. In renewables that means heat pumps in basements, fuel cells in warehouses, inverters on solar farms, and turbines on hilltops, and the fastest growth is in the equipment homeowners now buy: Germany sold 299,000 heating heat pumps in 2025, 55% more than a year earlier, and each one needs commissioning and servicing.

What field service technicians do

A field service technician's week is set by the ticket queue. A typical visit starts with an alarm or a customer complaint, continues with fault-finding on site, often with a remote engineer on the phone, and ends with a part swap, a firmware update, or a report that sends the problem back to the factory. Commissioning makes up a large share of the work for new equipment, since many manufacturers tie their warranty to commissioning by a trained technician.

The role differs from operations and maintenance in one respect: loyalty to the equipment rather than the site. An O&M technician looks after one wind farm or solar park, whatever is installed there; a field service engineer knows one product family in depth and travels to wherever it is installed. That explains the travel. Many US adverts are for rotational roles, four weeks on the road and one week off, and European roles typically cover a region from a home base with a company van.

Employers hiring field service staff

Hydrogen and fuel cell companies are among the largest recruiters. Plug Power employs field service technicians to keep fuel cell forklift fleets and hydrogen fuelling equipment running at customer warehouses, and Bloom Energy services its solid oxide fuel cell systems at data centres and industrial sites. In German homes, 1KOMMA5° hires service technicians for solar, battery, and heat pump systems; the standard German advert for such roles asks for a Servicetechniker SHK (heating, plumbing, and air conditioning).

Power equipment makers form another group. Wärtsilä sends engineers to commission and service battery storage and engine plants, AEG Power Solutions services the power electronics behind industrial and hydrogen installations, and Vestas runs its own service organisation for turbines. Owners and contractors, including SOLV Energy, NextEra Energy, Invenergy, and Sunrun, hire field technicians for large fleets and residential systems. Texas leads the US openings, with Houston, Austin, and Dallas at the top, while Hamburg, Berlin, and Dresden lead in Germany.

Skills that command a premium

Electrical qualifications set the floor, and manufacturer training sets the pay. Technicians who can read wiring diagrams, work safely on high-voltage DC systems, and diagnose control software faults are harder to find than those who can replace parts. Many move on into solar O&M supervision, commissioning, or technical support roles.

Wind remains one of the most reliable sources of demand. GWEC and the Global Wind Organisation expect demand for wind technicians to reach around 628,000 by 2030, up from about 475,000 in 2025.
