Field Service Jobs in Renewable Energy
Field service in renewable energy covers the technicians and engineers who travel to operating sites - solar farms, wind plants, hydrogen stations, battery installations - to commission new equipment, diagnose faults, and carry out repairs that keep generation assets producing. These are the boots-on-asset roles between the factory and the control room, and they sit at the centre of the operations and maintenance economy that now employs a large share of the 16.6 million people working in renewables worldwide.
What the work actually looks like
A field service technician's day rarely matches the job ad. Tickets shift with weather, inverter alarms, and turbine downtime, and a single visit might involve torquing bolts at hub height, swapping a failed string combiner, recalibrating a SCADA sensor, or talking a remote operator through a controller reset. Solar-focused roles concentrate on PV modules, central and string inverters, transformers, trackers, and DC combiner boxes; wind-focused roles run from blade inspections and gearbox oil sampling to pitch and yaw system overhauls. Across both, there is a hard floor of electrical competence - working safely around medium-voltage gear, reading single-line diagrams, isolating energised circuits - that distinguishes this work from general industrial maintenance.
Where demand is concentrated
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects wind turbine service technician employment to grow 49.9% between 2024 and 2034, tied with solar PV installers as the fastest-growing occupation in the country, with roughly 2,300 wind technician openings projected each year of the decade. Hourly pay for solar field service runs roughly $18 to $48 in the US depending on certification and region, and rotational 100%-travel roles pay a clear premium for crews willing to live on the road.
Employers hiring at scale include Plug Power for hydrogen and fuel-cell field service, SOLV Energy for utility-scale solar O&M, NextEra Energy for mixed wind-solar-storage fleets, and Wärtsilä for battery storage commissioning. Texas leads the US for total openings, with Houston, Dallas, and Austin all in the top five posting cities on Rejobs; Germany (Hamburg) and France contribute the largest non-US concentrations.
Certifications and skill premiums
NABCEP's PV Commissioning & Maintenance Specialist credential has become the most-requested qualification on US solar field service postings; on the wind side, GWO basic safety training plus a manufacturer-specific platform course (Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, GE Vernova) is the typical floor. Technicians who can read a control diagram and a string-level IV curve, rather than only swap parts, move into Commissioning and lead-tech roles within two to three years. Battery storage is the fastest-evolving sub-domain: BMS troubleshooting and high-voltage DC safety now pull the highest hourly rates.
Adjacent paths
Most field service careers branch into Solar O&M and Wind O&M team leadership, or sideways into Plant Operations and SCADA-focused monitoring work.
