Fuel Cells jobs in renewable energy

Fuel Cells Jobs in Renewable Energy

Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that turn hydrogen, natural gas, or biogas into electricity and heat without combustion, and fuel cell professionals design the stacks, build the systems around them, and install and service them in vehicles, factories, and power plants. In 2025 the market's centre of gravity moved to stationary power: Bloom Energy had deployed about 1.4 GW of systems at more than 1,000 sites and planned to double annual production capacity to 2 GW by the end of 2026, largely on demand from data centres.

Stationary power and the data-centre boom

Data centres need large amounts of power faster than grid connections can deliver it, and a packaged fuel cell plant can be installed on site in months. That explains the hiring spike at the US manufacturers. Bloom's solid oxide fuel cells, which run hot enough to take natural gas directly, supply operators such as Equinix and CoreWeave, and in October 2025 Bloom agreed a $5 billion partnership with Brookfield Asset Management to power AI data centres. Most of these units burn natural gas today, so the climate benefit depends on a later switch to biogas or hydrogen. FuelCell Energy, in Torrington and Danbury in Connecticut, makes carbonate fuel cells for utility and industrial sites.

Mobility and hydrogen power in Europe

The vehicle market is weaker than the stationary one. The IEA's Global Hydrogen Review 2025 finds heavy trucks are the only fast-growing market for fuel cell vehicles, and China holds almost 95% of the world's fuel cell commercial vehicle fleet. European work therefore clusters around niches: HDF Energy in Blanquefort near Bordeaux develops hydrogen power plants that pair solar or wind with fuel cells to deliver firm electricity, and German start-ups such as Reverion build reversible fuel cells that let biogas plants generate power and store it as hydrogen. Plug Power, based in Albany, New York, straddles the two sides of the hydrogen chain, selling fuel cells for warehouse forklifts alongside electrolysers, which run the same electrochemistry in reverse.

What the jobs are

Field service technicians account for more listings than any other title on Rejobs, many of them at Bloom and Plug Power, with German-language openings for European deployments. The work combines electrical, mechanical, and gas-handling tasks: swapping stack modules, troubleshooting balance-of-plant equipment such as blowers, reformers, and heat exchangers, and commissioning new sites. Behind the field teams sit process technicians and operators on cell and stack production lines, welders, commissioning specialists, and control centre staff who monitor fleets of installed units remotely. Engineering roles cover stack and materials development, test and conditioning, and power electronics for the inverters that connect a fuel cell's direct current output to the grid or a data hall.

Skills that stand out

Electrochemistry and ceramics expertise is scarce and concentrated in a few companies, so experienced stack engineers move between them readily. For technicians, a background in HVAC, gas turbines, or industrial maintenance transfers well, especially with high-voltage and gas safety qualifications. Engineers who can work on both solid oxide and PEM platforms, or on both fuel cells and electrolysers, have the widest choice as the industry sorts out which applications will scale.
