Plumbing & Pipefitting Jobs in Renewable Energy
Plumbing and pipefitting in renewable energy is the hands-on installation of pipework that carries heat and gas: heat pump primary and secondary circuits, district heating service connections and transfer stations, biogas collection and upgrading lines, and process piping in geothermal and hydrogen plants. This is site work with a torch and a press tool, distinct from piping engineering, which produces the drawings and stress calculations.
Germany supplies most of the listings under this tag, and the German numbers explain why. Manufacturers sold 299,000 heating heat pumps in 2025, up 55% on 2024, the first year in which close to half of all heat generators sold were heat pumps. Each unit needs someone to size and connect a hydraulic circuit that a gas boiler never demanded, because a heat pump only reaches its rated efficiency at low flow temperatures.
Growth in one product, not in the trade
The trade as a whole is not expanding with it. ZVSHK put German SHK turnover at €59.1 billion in 2025 across about 48,000 businesses and 390,000 employees, fractionally below 2024 and with orders and capacity utilisation declining. What is happening is a change of mix rather than a boom: boiler replacements are giving way to heat pump installations and heat network connections, and the installers who made that switch are busy while those who did not are watching order books thin. Apprentice numbers barely moved, with 40,770 registered in Anlagenmechaniker SHK, up 0.8%.
Heat networks are the next tranche of work
German municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants had to produce a municipal heat plan by 30 June 2026, with smaller municipalities due by 30 June 2028. Those plans designate which streets get a heat network, and every designated street eventually becomes trenching, pre-insulated pipe welding, and hundreds of building transfer stations. For pipefitters this is the difference between domestic work and infrastructure work: larger diameters, welding qualifications, and construction site conditions rather than a customer's cellar. District heating and cooling is where the trade meets the utilities.
Who is hiring, and for what
1KOMMA5° recruits Anlagenmechaniker SHK and Obermonteure for heat technology across German cities, including career changers taken on as site helpers and trained up. Utilities and contractors such as Vattenfall, ENGIE, and SPIE Wind hire Bauleiter for pipeline and plant construction, where the job becomes supervision, documentation, and pressure testing. Biogas specialists including PRODEVAL run mobile teams maintaining gas upgrading skids across France, which is closer to process plant service than to plumbing.
The premium sits with certified welders. Hydrogen and geothermal plants need pipework built to procedure with material traceability and radiographed joints, and a coded welder who also understands hydraulic balancing can move between domestic retrofit, network construction, and plant work as each market moves. Welding and fabrication qualifications, not a further heating certificate, are what usually raise the ceiling. The training route is unusually open in Germany: an apprenticeship in Anlagenmechaniker Rohrsystemtechnik takes three and a half years, and several employers in this category currently advertise it directly.
