Approximately 10 employees (source: lowercarbon.com).

What They Do

Airloom Energy is a pioneering wind energy startup that focuses on innovative utility-scale wind power technology. The company has developed a unique hybrid design that adapts airborne wind energy physics to ground-based applications, significantly reducing the mass of traditional horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs) by 93%. This innovative approach allows for a claimed 15x capital cost advantage and a levelized cost of energy as low as $13-15 per megawatt-hour, making it over 50% cheaper than conventional onshore wind solutions (source: idtechex.com). The core product, the Airloom turbine, features a modular design with multiple small vertical blades or wings that are mounted on slender posts, allowing for easy transport and rapid assembly.

Projects & Track Record

Airloom Energy has successfully tested prototypes in various locations, including Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, and with the U.S. Department of Defense in Paso Robles, California. The company has developed a 50-kilowatt model at its Laramie R&D facility, demonstrating the basic physics and operational capabilities of its technology (source: cowboystatedaily.com). Their first megawatt-scale pilot project, which is fully permitted, is located near Rock River, Wyoming, and broke ground in June 2024. This project aims to validate the power curve and potentially sell power to an off-taker, with construction expected to be completed by the end of 2024 (source: renewableenergyworld.com). Additionally, Airloom has plans for a commercial 2.5 MW demonstration following the pilot project, targeting completion in 2026.

Recent Developments

In November 2023, Airloom Energy successfully raised a $4 million seed round led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, which was founded by Bill Gates. This funding will support ongoing prototype testing and the appointment of CEO Neal Rickner (source: cowboystatedaily.com). By May 2024, the company filed to raise an additional $12.7 million from 21 undisclosed investors to fund the 1 MW pilot project originally targeted for 2026. This funding effort is part of ongoing discussions with Breakthrough and other venture capitalists (source: techcrunch.com). Early grants have also been secured, including $1,000 from Wyoming's Small Business Development Center, which was leveraged into $1 million from the National Science Foundation (source: thinkwy.org).

Working There

Airloom Energy offers a dynamic work environment focused on innovation in renewable energy technology. The company is small but growing, with roles primarily centered around engineering, research and development, and project management. Job Description

Airloom Energy is building the next era of resilient, utility-scale power. Our patented wind generation system replaces massive traditional turbines with a low-profile, roller-coaster-style track that uses small, adjustable wings to capture wind energy more efficiently, at lower cost, and in a fraction of the time. By dramatically reducing parts, mass, and construction timelines, Airloom is unlocking faster, more scalable clean energy deployment-designed to respect the land, the views, and the communities we serve. With headquarters in Laramie, Wyoming and a pilot system underway near Rock River, we're assembling a team to help bring this breakthrough technology to global scale.
