Wind Resource Assessment Jobs in Renewable Energy
Wind resource assessment is the discipline of measuring atmospheric conditions at a candidate site, modelling the wind regime across the rotor area, and translating those measurements into a bankable estimate of how much electricity a project will produce over its lifetime. The work sits at the front of every wind farm, before any steel touches the ground, and it determines whether lenders will fund the project at all.
A typical campaign runs 12 to 24 months and combines remote-sensing LiDAR, fixed meteorological masts, and decades of mesoscale reanalysis data. Assessors then build energy yield models that banks scrutinise as P50 and P90 estimates, the values that size the debt. The new IEC 61400-15-1:2025 standard formalises the assessment and reporting framework for both onshore and offshore site suitability, and most European lenders now expect compliance before releasing senior debt.
The market is concentrated where pipelines are deepest. Europe installed 16.4 GW of new wind capacity in 2024 (13.8 GW onshore, 2.6 GW offshore), and WindEurope's 2030 outlook calls for 187 GW more by 2030, lifting the sector's workforce from 443,000 to 607,000 jobs. Resource assessment teams sit upstream of every megawatt in that pipeline.
Where the roles sit
Three employer types absorb most assessors. Independent technical advisers like Natural Power and DNV produce the bankability reports lenders accept. Developers staff in-house assessment teams: UKA Umweltgerechte Kraftanlagen, wpd, and EDP Renewables all run their own pre-construction analytics. Turbine OEMs like Nordex and Vestas hire wind experts inside their power performance and siting groups, where the assessment feeds suitability classification and warranty terms.
Germany hosts more openings than any other European country, with Hamburg, Rostock, Bremen, and Dresden anchoring the cluster.
What the roles look like
Job titles vary by employer style. Developers post for "Projektentwickler Wind" with energy yield responsibilities embedded; technical advisers post for "Wind Analyst," "Wind Engineer," or "Energy Yield Specialist." OEMs use titles like "Specialist - Offshore Load Analysis" and "Wind Expert." A small but growing branch sits in weather science, where companies running short-term forecasting platforms hire "Weather-to-Power Data Scientists" who bridge resource assessment with operational forecasting.
The technical stack centres on WAsP, WindPRO, OpenWind, or Continuum for flow modelling, Python or R for time-series analysis, and GIS for siting constraints. Field exposure to IEC 61400-12-1 power performance testing or LiDAR validation campaigns commands a clear premium. German wind analysts earn around €66,000 on average, with senior bankability leads at independent consultancies reaching €90,000 to €110,000.
Where the field is heading
Three shifts are reshaping the work. LiDAR has largely displaced tall met masts on new campaigns, cutting permitting headaches and shortening measurement timelines. Floating LiDAR is now the default tool offshore. And as repowering accelerates in Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, assessors increasingly produce site-suitability studies for second-generation projects on already-built land.
