Job Description

At Kyoto Group, our mission is to make renewable energy the easy and reliable choice for industry. Our thermal battery technology enables industrial customers to replace fossil fuels with clean electricity for heat production, without compromising efficiency, reliability, or cost.

Industrial heat accounts for nearly half of global energy consumption, making it one of the most critical frontiers in the energy transition. By storing renewable electricity as heat and delivering it when needed, we enable industries to fully leverage variable energy sources such as wind and solar.

Kyoto Group is not only delivering technology, we are also accelerating the transition to a low-carbon industrial system.

Kyoto's vision

Kyoto Group is named after the Kyoto Protocol, the landmark international treaty that laid the foundation for global climate action. Just as the Protocol paved the way for agreements like the Paris Agreement, the Kyoto Group is helping set the stage for a cleaner, more sustainable industrial future.

About the opportunity

Kyoto Group has successfully engineered, validated, and demonstrated its technology through pilot deployments. The company now enters the critical phase of transforming this advanced engineering solution into a standardized, scalable, and commercially competitive industrial product platform.

The Chief Technology Officer will lead this transition, ensuring the technology platform is industrialized, cost-optimized, and ready for global commercialization.

The mandate

The CTO will lead a clear transformation:

From: Advanced engineering solution with pilot deployments

To: Industrialized, cost-optimized, configurable product platform ready for scalable commercialization

This role will own the technical architecture and product platform strategy underpinning Kyoto Group's long-term commercial scalability.

Key priorities

Industrialization & Product platform

  • Convert the current engineering solution into a scalable industrial product platform
  • Drive modular architecture and configurable system design
  • Implement industrial readiness and product release processes

Cost engineering

  • Optimize the system Bill of Materials and cost structure
  • Drive value engineering initiatives aligned with target margins

Product lifecycle management

  • Implement PLM and configuration management
  • Introduce disciplined engineering change control

Supply ecosystem

  • Develop supplier strategy and industrial partnerships
  • Establish scalable manufacturing and supply chain structures

Engineering organization

  • Transition the engineering organization from development-focused to product-focused
  • Introduce KPIs linked to scalability, cost, and deployment performance

Transformation outcomes (12-24 Months)

  • Fully industrialized and commercially ready product platform
  • Cost-optimized product architecture aligned with margin targets
  • Implemented PLM and configuration management
  • Resilient supplier and manufacturing ecosystem
  • Simplified deployment through modular integration
  • Clear multi-year product and technology roadmap
  • Engineering organization operating with industrial discipline

Candidate profile

  • 15+ years in senior engineering or technology leadership roles
  • Proven experience bringing complex industrial or energy systems from development to market
  • Strong track record in industrialization, product platform development, and cost engineering
  • Deep understanding of supply chains, manufacturing scale-up, and systems architecture

The role is particularly suited to leaders who have previously industrialized complex hardware platforms or taken advanced technologies from prototype to scalable commercial products. Given the transformation nature of this assignment, the role may be structured as:

  • Full-time Chief Technology Officer
  • Interim / Transformation CTO
  • Fixed-term executive mandate

Location

The role can be based anywhere in Europe and may be performed largely remotely.
The CTO will work closely with teams in Sevilla (engineering and industrialization) and Oslo (corporate leadership and strategic alignment). Permanent relocation is not required.

Are you eager to join a fast-growing scale-up at the forefront of the energy transition?

At Kyoto Group, we give our people the freedom and responsibility to take ownership, innovate, and solve complex challenges, while making a real contribution to decarbonizing industry.

We are building a diverse and collaborative workplace where people from different backgrounds unite around a shared mission: enabling renewable thermal energy for industry.

We offer competitive compensation and benefits, including medical, travel, life insurance, and pension, and a flexible work environment that supports growth and collaboration. From professional development to team events and seasonal celebrations, we invest in our people and the culture we build together.
