What They Do
Snowy Hydro's core technology focus is on pumped hydro-electricity, gas-fired peaking, diesel peaking, and contracted wind and solar renewables. The company operates 16 power stations and one pumping station, boasting a total generating capacity of over 5,500 MW dispatched to the National Electricity Market (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which is a significant part of their operations, features nine hydro-electric power stations and 16 dams linked by 145 km of tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts, primarily located in Kosciuszko National Park. Additionally, Snowy Hydro manages water storage and diversion under the Snowy Water Licence for irrigation to the Murray and Murrumbidgee systems (source: wikipedia.org).
Projects & Track Record
Snowy Hydro has a rich history of notable projects, including the original Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which was completed in 1974 and delivered a total output of 3,740 MW from seven power stations, such as Guthega, which began operations in 1955 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The company also operates significant gas assets, including the Colongra Power Station (667 MW, acquired in 2015), Laverton North (320 MW), and Latrobe Valley (300 MW) in Victoria, along with three diesel stations in South Australia totaling 136 MW (source: wikipedia.org). Currently, major projects include Snowy 2.0, which aims to link the Tantangara and Talbingo dams via a 27 km underground tunnel and establish a new pumped-hydro station for 2,000 MW generation and 175 hours of storage, with construction having commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au).
Recent Developments
In March 2018, the Australian Government acquired full ownership of Snowy Hydro by purchasing shares from New South Wales and Victoria, solidifying its status as a wholly-owned Commonwealth entity (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The construction of Snowy 2.0 is a significant advancement in the company's portfolio, marking it as a nation-building pumped-hydro project that commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). Additionally, Snowy Hydro has secured contracts for over 1,000 MW from ten wind and solar projects, enhancing its renewable energy offerings (source: leadiq.com).

Snowy Hydro owns and operates a powerful combination of generation assets, including the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme, gas and diesel plants, and contracted wind and solar energy. We also provide electricity and gas to about 1.5 million retail customers through our retail brands Red Energy and Lumo Energy.
A 9-12 month fixed-term contract exists for the Head of Operations Services within the Strategic Partnerships & Sourcing team.
About the position
As the Head of Operations Services reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). As the architect of our end-to-end supply chain and support strategy, you will provide essential strategic input to the leadership team and sit at the center of Snowy Hydro's industrial reality. This isn't just about moving parts; it's about ensuring our generation fleet remains reliable and our workforce remains supported in Australia's most iconic alpine environments. You will lead a multidisciplinary team of functional experts, managing everything from global procurement hurdles to the facilities that our people call home.
Key Responsibilities
- You will navigate a diverse global supplier landscape, building "true partnership" relationships that ensure Snowy Hydro is a priority customer for critical components and services.
- You will lead the "engine room" of our services integrating logistics, warehousing, fleet management, and accommodation to ensure maintenance and project teams have the right equipment, transport, and supplies-exactly when and where they are needed-while building seamless frontline relationships to eliminate bottlenecks and guarantee on-time performance in any environment.
- You will drive a service-oriented mindset while "holding the line" on operational discipline, demanding high-performance and accountability from internal interfaces to ensure they deliver the service levels and essential inputs required to meet our generation targets.
- You will drive the end-to-end procurement strategy by overseeing high-stakes contract negotiations and vendor management to ensure commercial value, risk mitigation, and the long-term security of our supply chain.
- You will take ownership of Snowy's dedicated housing in Cabramurra and Khancoban, ensuring our permanent and project-based workforce has the infrastructure they need to be productive and comfortable.
About the location
The preferred location for this role is Cooma; however, we may consider candidates from other Hydro office locations, such as Sydney or Melbourne, with the flexibility to travel across all Snowy sites interstate.
Enjoy flexible working arrangements with a minimum of 3 days in the office.
About you
You are a seasoned operations leader who thrives at the intersection of commercial strategy and industrial reality. You understand that in an asset-intensive industry, the "cost of unavailability" is your most important metric. Your Toolkit includes:
- A sharp commercial edge in procurement strategy, risk mitigation, and high-stakes decision-making within heavy-asset environments.
- A proven track record of leading multidisciplinary functions and mentoring senior direct reports to align with broader organisational goals.
- The ability to demand and instill high standards of performance from internal interfaces and external partners, ensuring support functions meet the urgent needs of the frontline.
- The ability to navigate complex contractual issues and "hold the line" during negotiations to safeguard operational and commercial interests.
- The ability to bridge the gap between supply chain execution and long-term asset management or power generation targets.
- A Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or a related field.
- A background in heavy-asset sectors (e.g., Energy, Mining, or Infrastructure), with specialised knowledge in supply chain and contract management would be an asset.
