Ecotricity

Company Overview

Ecotricity

Stroud, United Kingdom

1995

Approximately 15 employees (source: linkedin.com). Revenue of £500 million in FY 2025 (source: ecotricity.co.uk).

What They Do

Ecotricity specializes in renewable energy, focusing on wind power, solar power, and green gas generation. The company is recognized as the world's first green energy provider, delivering 100% certified green electricity generated from its own wind and solar assets, as well as purchasing certified green energy from other sources (source: ecotricity.co.uk). Approximately 10% of the electricity supplied comes from Ecotricity's own generation, while the remaining 90% is sourced from other green generators or the wholesale market (source: ecotricity.co.uk). The company operates under a unique model where customer payments directly fund the construction of new renewable generation facilities, aligning with its mission to expand the UK's renewable energy supply rather than simply redistributing existing capacity (source: ecotricity.co.uk).

Projects & Track Record

Ecotricity has made significant strides in renewable energy projects, including the construction of 24 wind parks across the UK, featuring 74 windmills with a total installed capacity of 87.2 megawatts (source: ecotricity.co.uk). These facilities generate enough energy to power over 60,000 homes and save over 28,000 tonnes of CO2 annually (source: ecotricity.co.uk). The company also opened its first solar park in 2011, which was the first grid-scale solar installation in Britain, and has since expanded its solar capacity to 16.5 megawatts with additional parks in Leicestershire and Devon (source: ecotricity.co.uk). Currently, Ecotricity is developing a major solar project at Heckington Fen in Lincolnshire, which will feature 600 megawatts of solar capacity and 400 megawatts of battery storage (source: ecotricity.co.uk).

Recent Developments

In 2025, Ecotricity secured planning permission for the Heckington Fen solar park, marking a significant milestone in its infrastructure development (source: ecotricity.co.uk). The company is also celebrating its 30-year anniversary since its founding in 1995, reflecting on its pioneering role in the green energy sector (source: ecotricity.co.uk). Additionally, Ecotricity has been recognized in New Zealand as the first electricity product globally to achieve Toitū climate positive certification, further solidifying its commitment to sustainability (source: ecotricity.co.uk).

Working There

Ecotricity's organizational structure encompasses various roles in engineering, construction, commercial contracting, grid connection management, customer service, and administration, all essential for operating renewable energy generation facilities (source: ecotricity.co.uk). The company promotes a mission-driven culture focused on ending fossil fuels and addressing climate change, which is reflected in its not-for-dividend structure that prioritizes reinvestment over profit maximization (source: ecotricity.co.uk). While specific benefits are not detailed, the emphasis on purpose-driven work in renewable energy infrastructure development suggests a unique appeal for prospective employees (source: ecotricity.co.uk).

Job Description

Ecotricity isn't like other energy companies. Since 1995 we've been turning customers' energy bills into new energy generation, building a cleaner Britain from the ground up. We're a not-for-dividend company, and our profits go back into our mission to end Britain's dependence on fossil fuels and many other green initiatives.

Technology underpins everything we do. Our customers, our operational platforms, and our ability to scale all depend on a technology estate that is reliable, secure, and well-run. Technology Operations sits at the centre of that - and we need the right person leading it. If you've already operated at this level and you want to do it somewhere that matters, read on.

The Role

This role will lead our Infrastructure, Service Desk, Desktop Operations, and Security teams, with accountability for the reliability, resilience, security, and performance of our IT systems. You will be visible to stakeholders, credible with engineers, and bring a wealth of experience.

Key Deliverables

Infrastructure Development

  • Drive strategic platform improvements, alignment, and rationalising where appropriate, ensuring the estate remains maintainable and future-ready.
  • Streamline tooling and automation to reduce manual intervention and improve visibility.
  • Contribute to the technology operations strategy, ensuring scalability, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with future business needs.

Customer Focus

  • Work with operations management to establish a streamlined service experience for frontline and back-office functions.
  • Define and own the service catalogue, KPIs, and SLAs that hold the team accountable.

Cyber Security & Risk

  • Lead our cyber security programme, working with specialist partners to maintain a strong and continuously improving security posture.
  • Deliver a clear risk reduction roadmap with measurable outcomes.
  • Build a culture where technology risk is everyone's responsibility.

Service Reliability & Performance

  • Ensure patching, access control, monitoring, and logging are consistently fit for purpose.
  • Own the incident, problem, and change management lifecycle end-to-end.
  • Deliver transparent performance reporting to leadership through dashboards and regular reviews.

Team Leadership

  • Lead with clarity, set meaningful objectives, and build a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Support the development of your team and model the professional standards you expect.

Business Continuity & DR

  • Mature and strengthen the Operations team's role in our BCP and Disaster Recovery procedures, ensuring they remain robust, tested, and fit for a growing organisation.

Ensure every mission-critical platform has a clearly owned recovery process

About You

What You Will Bring

  • A track record of senior leadership in technology operations - you will have held a Head of or equivalent role and can speak directly to the outcomes you delivered.
  • Deep, current understanding of infrastructure, networking, cloud platforms, and security - you partake in your team's thinking and delivery, not just relay it upwards.
  • Demonstrated ownership of BCP and DR programmes - built, tested, and iterated, not just signed off.
  • Proven incident management experience - you have owned these end-to-end and can speak with authority on how you've managed them in practice.
  • Change delivery - You will have delivered platform change with demonstrable rationale and benefits.
  • Stakeholder credibility at every level - equally comfortable in a technical post-mortem and an executive briefing.
  • A proactive, visible style - you identify problems, propose solutions, and follow through.

What's in it for you...

Healthcare plan, life assurance and generous pension contribution
Volunteering Day
Hybrid Working
Various company discounts (including shops, gyms, days out and events)
Holiday of 25 days (plus bank holidays) & ability to buy/sell days
Cycle to work scheme, car pooling and onsite parking available

As a valued member of the team, you will be supporting the Group Environmental Policy and its associated sustainability objectives and targets.

Flexibility Statement

The fast moving nature of the business means that from time to time you may be asked to perform duties or tasks outside of your original job description on an ad hoc basis. This allows the company to utilise our people in the best possible way at all times and helps our colleagues to make the best contribution in a changing environment.

Ecotricity is Britain's overall greenest energy company- it's more than just green energy - the breadth and depth of our work on green issues is unmatched. When we started back in 1995, we were the first company in the world to provide a new kind of electricity - the green kind.

Our mission was, and remains, to change the way energy is made and used in Britain - by replacing fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy.

We don't just supply green energy, we use the money from our customers' bills to make it ourselves too - we have built windmills and sun parks in Britain. We call this turning 'bills into mills'.

We don't just focus on energy though- we built the Electric Highway, Britain's leading network of electric vehicle charging points; we helped Forest Green Rovers become the greenest football club in the world; and we launched Britain's greenest mobile phone service, Ecotalk, where they use the money from their customers' bills to protect and regenerate Britain's lost rainforests.

Ecotricity is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to providing equality for all.
