What They Do
Snowy Hydro's core technology focus is on pumped hydro-electricity, gas-fired peaking, diesel peaking, and contracted wind and solar renewables. The company operates 16 power stations and one pumping station, boasting a total generating capacity of over 5,500 MW dispatched to the National Electricity Market (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which is a significant part of their operations, features nine hydro-electric power stations and 16 dams linked by 145 km of tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts, primarily located in Kosciuszko National Park. Additionally, Snowy Hydro manages water storage and diversion under the Snowy Water Licence for irrigation to the Murray and Murrumbidgee systems (source: wikipedia.org).
Projects & Track Record
Snowy Hydro has a rich history of notable projects, including the original Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which was completed in 1974 and delivered a total output of 3,740 MW from seven power stations, such as Guthega, which began operations in 1955 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The company also operates significant gas assets, including the Colongra Power Station (667 MW, acquired in 2015), Laverton North (320 MW), and Latrobe Valley (300 MW) in Victoria, along with three diesel stations in South Australia totaling 136 MW (source: wikipedia.org). Currently, major projects include Snowy 2.0, which aims to link the Tantangara and Talbingo dams via a 27 km underground tunnel and establish a new pumped-hydro station for 2,000 MW generation and 175 hours of storage, with construction having commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au).
Recent Developments
In March 2018, the Australian Government acquired full ownership of Snowy Hydro by purchasing shares from New South Wales and Victoria, solidifying its status as a wholly-owned Commonwealth entity (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The construction of Snowy 2.0 is a significant advancement in the company's portfolio, marking it as a nation-building pumped-hydro project that commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). Additionally, Snowy Hydro has secured contracts for over 1,000 MW from ten wind and solar projects, enhancing its renewable energy offerings (source: leadiq.com).

About the position
As our Senior Project Engineer, you are the eyes and ears on the ground for the Snowy 2.0 Owners team. Reporting directly to the Project Manager, your core mission is to oversee contractor activities as the project transitions from primary excavation into the critical structural completion phase. You will be instrumental in overseeing Formwork, Reinforcement, and Pour (FRP) activities, ensuring the built product meets all contractual requirements. More than just monitoring progress, you will proactively spot and solve potential issues before they become legacy problems, ensuring the Snowy 2.0 asset performs safely and successfully for generations to come.
Key Responsibilities
- Champion Safety First: Lead by example to create a culture where health and safety are non-negotiable, ensuring safety plans for high-risk FRP activities (like heavy lifting, steel fixing, and concrete pumping) are actively implemented and aligned with our core values.
- Oversee FRP and Structural Works: Keep a close, daily watch on underground construction-specifically formwork installation, reinforcement placement, and concrete pouring-to ensure everything aligns perfectly with the latest IFC drawings and specifications.
- Drive Quality in Concrete Construction: Monitor all aspects of the structural build, conducting pre-pour inspections, checking rebar spacing, verifying concrete quality and curing processes, and proactively catching potential quality drops before they happen.
- Ensure Transparency and Accountability: Drive strict quality assurance by reviewing Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and actively participating in critical witness and hold points before any concrete is poured. Keep the project on track by assessing lookahead schedules, swiftly managing Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) to resolve quality deviations, and reviewing contractor claims to maintain complete transparency.
About the location
This role is located on site working a 14/7 FIFO roster. Standard FIFO camp style arrangements are included.
About you
- The Right Foundation: A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a similar field, making you eligible for Corporate Membership with Engineers Australia.
- Proven Track Record: At least 5 years of hands-on experience working as a civil or tunnel engineer on large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Technical Expertise in FRP: Deep, practical knowledge of Formwork, Reinforcement, and Pour (FRP) methodologies, structural concrete elements, and post-excavation tunnel completion. (Note: Experience with TBM and drill & blast is a plus for understanding the complete tunnel lifecycle, but structural concrete expertise is key).
- Engineer Fluency: A strong grasp of structural engineering and quality assurance processes, paired with the ability to easily read and interpret complex work scopes, technical specifications, and rebar/formwork drawings.
- Exceptional People Skills: Highly developed communication, negotiation, and influencing skills, with a proven ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with both internal teams and on-site contractors
