About the Role

TransAlta is seeking a Hydro Scheduler to join our Hydro Optimization team. The ideal candidate has experience in hydropower, inflow forecasting, and a strong understanding of water resource optimization.

Reporting directly to the Manager, Hydro Optimization, as the Scheduler you are primarily responsible for preparing daily hydro operating plans and energy offers. This position requires strong analytical and quantitative skills, clear communication, and the ability to make practical operational decisions under pressure.

This is a full-time, safety-sensitive position based out of our Head Office in Downtown, Calgary, AB. Successful completion of pre-employment testing is required as a condition of employment.

A Day in the Life

  • Develop daily and hourly operating generation plans for Alberta hydro assets and submit daily energy offers to the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) using TransAlta's Hydro Modeling applications.
  • Work with the Asset Optimization team to maximize safe and efficient use of water resources within operational, environmental, dam safety, Water Act, and Alberta market constraints.
  • Ensure all environmental, operational, and regulatory restrictions are current and compliant with the AESO rules.
  • Provide daily operation guidelines to TransAlta's Hydro System Control Center (HSCC) Operators.
  • Support operations across hydro with technical advice related to water management.
  • Provide on-call support after hours and on weekends (rotating shift) to respond to emergent changes in equipment availability or hydrologic conditions.
  • Plan and coordinate spillway operations within the defined operating constraints identified in the TransAlta Flood Action Plan (FAP).
  • Ensure water and production data are accurate, the hydro tools used for scheduling are accurate, up to date, and reliable. Provide input to enhancements to tools currently in use.
  • Ensure the FAP is strictly followed during runoff season and emergency situations.

About You

  • University Degree in Engineering in Civil, Water Resources, or Hydrology and/or related specialty
  • Background knowledge and experience in water resources principles (meteorology, hydrology, and open-channel hydraulics, water management)
  • Strong energy market understanding
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written
  • Good organizational skills
  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of linear programming
  • Experience in an operationally intensive business
  • Previous field experience in water resources or hydro operations is desirable
  • Understanding of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems
  • Demonstrates ownership, delivers results, and acts with urgency.
  • Self-motivated, works independently, and takes initiative.
